A beautiful and tranquil park - a mere 45 minutes from Wellington City. The park is most popular for the fact that it is the home to Rivendell Elvish land in Lord of the Rings. However, lots more to be discovered here - and it’s a great camping spot as well. Fantastic day trip with kids.
Incredible place , the vibes from this sacred land are very peaceful throughout the beautifully maintained native bush lands . Plenty to see & do . Quite a few impressive Lord of the Rings monuments are worth noting . Nothing short of outstanding. Must visit .
Camped here for months while working on a native tree planting project overseen by park ranger Steve - thanks for all the learnings Steve. Power sites included water taps . Bbq facilities . Absolutely loved my time here. Very helpful park rangers. My favourite campsite in Wellington
Second time camping in here and still have a great experience, even though the wind storm hit at night until morning, lol!nnHave a plenty of camping area, you can choose whichever comfortable area for build the tend. Us, preferably pick near the toilet, river and built the tend under the big tree.nnClean toilet, but prepare your own toilet paper sometimes it’s empty. Clean kitchen area too and have a electric slot. Don’t forget bring your own dish washes.nnDid hiking to Rivendell site within a hours returns.nnIn the morning, did a walk to the river and feed the ducks with some of rice leftovers, but please don’t feed them bread.nnVery recommended camping site. Never get bored.nnDon’t forget bring repellent cream if you don’t wanna bite by the sandfly and use sunblock and hat too.
Great place, very quiet most of the time road noise sometimesnnFound the payment system doesnt recognise when 6 powered spots have been paid for in a 24hr period, but the Ranger will give a refund of the difference.nn$17/night powered site/adultn$8/night unpowered site/adultnChildren have a charge too cant remembernnPowered sites are great, toilet nearby, bbq area with power points nearby, 6 gravel spots with a bbq table each, box with 2 power point and 2 taps between the spotsnnUnpowered sites are numerous, sorted into Areas, we got 28 campervans including a medium sized Bus parked up and we still had room at area 13. there is a large sheltered bbq area with 2 electric hotplates and multiple hotpoints and the toilet block on the rear across from area 13 part of area 14nnLots of tracks and walks, some into serious tfamping levels, others a nice day walk, and as a LOTR fan visiting the Rivendell structure was very cool.nnGreat night skies despite being close to a city, still has some light pollution to the south, but directly up was very clear, but you will need lens heaters as it gets very damp in the evenings, one night was quite misty.nnMind the one way road system is not always followed, contractor vehicles and trucks were frequently travelling against the one way tracks.
