I had heard of Formosa and had decided to go there, but it turned out to be a mistake. Walking in we had high hopes, the decoration looked great, the Asian umbrellas, the wall paint, looked wonderful. Even the menu looked attractive. But it was too good to be true. At first the service seemed alright, clam, easy, but as the night moved on the service decreased into not caring about their customers. We ordered some drink drinks they were alright, decent, but room for improvement. Next came the food, and what a disappointment they were. The chicken wasn't cut properly, they didn't remove the cartilage, and not to mention it was chewy, I mean how can you go wrong with chicken? The fried rice weren't great also, too oily. Going back to the point of terrible service, we ordered more dishes but the waitress was so incompetent that we ordered a something and she brought another thing. But there was a bright moment in the evening, the sauces, they were exactly as they were described, SPICY! Amazing. The service time was way too long even for a busy restaurant. Apparently the chef had received 2017 NZ International Master Chef, but he doesn't live up to the standard.

After hearing about this restaurant we decided to give it a try. We drove an hour from Christchurch and we were impressed. The dishes here are really good! The interior is very trendy. We had Taiwanese beef noodle. The soup is so flavorful. We also ordered the orange soy pork which was delicious. The stir fried vege was well seasoned. Overall the experience was great.

The decor was amazing but the food is nothing to rave about. To much salt. The menu suck it didn't give much information about the food.

Enjoyed all our food selections:
+ Crispy squid
+ Taiwanese sausage
+ Black pepper steak
+ Braised pork belly
Staff very attentive and polite
Great decor and atmosphere

Delicious food and a great atmosphere for our social club dinner. Formosa is laid out really well with a gathering area and tables by the bar, and up the back a variety of seating arrangements, including the special room behind the gold curtain.  The butterfly pudding soft drink has to be tried!
