I Cheryl Ann Wilson had a Laminectomy at 19 which caused me to end up with left leg paralysed for 13 years and in a wheelchair for the last 3 years with no disc at all at L5/S1. Dr MSY was the first surgeon after 25 surgeon's that I had seen, orthopaedic and neurologist who gave me hope that I could walk again. That was 21 years ago. It took me a year but I learned to walk again. He just replaced my L4/L5 2 1/2 years ago. I have a Degenerative Spine Syndrome. I would not have any other surgeon touch my spine. I am a very complex case and he still took me on. I may need further disc replacement in my neck and I know when I do who I will call. The staff treat you like family and so does he. DR MSY literally saved my life and allowed me to have my babies. That is something I can never repay.
I have had 3 major spinal surgeries from Mathew Scott-Young, in 2006, 2007 and 2023. All have been incredibly successful and have truly saved me from dreadful pain, hugely restricting my life. He and the Practice Manager have built a wonderful team around them as well, including their really helpful, efficient and professional receptionist, nurse etc. I'm so very thankful for this remarkable surgeon and his team.
We did not even get past the receptionist / patient liasion. We only wished to see Dr Scott Young to discuss treatment options for degenerative back issues. But he will not see anyone who has had previous surgery, by another surgeon. Shame, we would've been happy to discuss other surgeons. We just wanted to discuss it with Dr Scott Young, due to his extensive knowledge and reputation.
After 30 years plus of back pain, aches, spasms and nerve tingling, I was operated on by Dr. Matthew Scott Young and his team. I cannot give high enough praise on every facet of the journey. I will not forget his visit on a Saturday morning dressed in his rugby shorts and thongs. His enthusiasm is infectious and his confidence was inspiring. It's 3 months post operation and I feel like a million bucks. Thank you. It's been just over 5 years since my surgery. I have a fushion of L5/L6 and a disk replacement between L5/L4. I mountain bike, play Open Grade squash, run, ride a trail bike off-road and do pretty much anything I want to. I am about to start jui jitsu. I cannot thank you enough Dr. Scott-Young. I have no pain at all and there is literally nothing I cannot do because of the surgery.
Today marks my 6-month post operative anniversary and I cannot believe how life-changing this surgery has been. I was initially referred to another surgeon by my GP and after an MRI and EOS Xray, I was advised by the surgeon that I had an L5/S1 full thickness disc rupture and was subsequently told there was nothing that could be done to help me. After living with back pain for the last 30 years, which had gradually worsened over the past 5 years to the point where I would have periods of chronic pain for 3-6 months at a time, I was devastated to be told that nothing could be done. Being a fit and active person my entire life, the last 5 years had meant modifying many of my activities and instead of feeling my age 50 I was feeling more like an 80-year-old woman…especially when I woke up each morning and felt so stiff and sore. Ultimately I decided the prognosis I was given by the first surgeon was just not acceptable and after doing my own research, I came across Dr Matthew Scott-Young. After being sent for further tests EMG and Discogram, to review the extent of damage and to ensure the best procedure would be selected for my injury, a total disc replacement of L5/S1 was recommended. During the initial and follow up consultation I found Dr Scott-Young to be extremely knowledgeable, confident and a ‘straight shooter’ which gave me confidence in proceeding. All of the staff at his clinic are also very supportive and friendly. Whilst I was scared about having back surgery, the thought of continuing to live life in pain and having to modify my lifestyle was just not an option. Immediately after surgery, Dr Scott-Young was at Pindara every morning checking on his patients and giving support and encouragement. I was surprised how quickly I was up and about walking the corridors with the help of the fantastic physios from Physio Next Door! So, I have to say, that having a total disc replacement turned out to be the best decision I have ever made. I didn’t actually realise how much pain I was in every day until now, because I don’t have any! This is what a healthy spine feels like and I can do all the things I love again – without pain; running, strength training, kayaking, SUPing, hiking…even going on a roller coaster. Thank-you Dr Scott-Young for giving me my life back! Sonja Bella PS. I also can’t recommend enough that you see the physio’s as soon as you know you are having surgery and start doing core strengthening exercises straight away they only take a few minutes a day. I started doing my exercises 3 months before surgery because I wanted to do everything I could to speed up my recovery time and I am still doing them now, 6 months later. Dr Scott-Young will do everything he can to fix your spine, but the more engaged you are in your recovery, the better your results will be
After having severe back pain for numerous years I was pleased to meet Dr Scott-Young. Since having a disc replacement I have had zero back pain and have returned to a fully functional and living my life. Highly recommended
i have considered if leaving a review for this clinic is something i should do or not and i believe if it helps one person it is very much worth it. the reception staff were very nice and generally great to deal with but that is where it ends, I had seen Dr MSY for approx. one year before seeking advice and help from other clinics. at the beginning of my time seeing DR MSY he had reviewed my case and was well aware of the situation that i was told wouldn't be an issue. the clinic was more than happy to continue to book me in for appointments with now knowing they had zero intention of helping me. my health fund required some justification documents to be submitted that I had been told through the clinic they had been that never were and was also told that through previous experience that they would no longer be willing to help. when i asked for my documents to be sent to a different clinic the general manager called to speak badly and advise i do not see them. after seeking advice on the proposed surgery MSY had proposed all that reviewed were shocked at the procedure as it was far too aggressive for someone of my age. after going to the other clinics i settled on one after 6 months i am now 7 weeks post multi-level disk replacement from another gold coast clinic and extremely happy that i did seek further advice and the difference post-surgery is life changing. i genuinely believe that if i had have continued to make pointless appointments with this clinic i would be still getting strung along in false hope. given my injury had massive impacts on both physical and mental health that is nowhere near good enough for anyone. i would very strongly advise to do a small amount of homework on DR MSY and use a different clinic.
MAtthew Scott Young successfully operated on my cervical spine in 2014 and my lumbar spine this year. From the moment you enter the Gold Coast Spine offices, you are greeted warmly and professionally guided through each part of the appointment and this warm, personal, professionalism starts with Matthew himself. Before Matthew commits to a diagnosis, he arranges scans, induction tests, disco grams and any other tool he thinks necessary to ensure you have the best diagnosis and outcome from surgery. Once surgery has been arranged the team ensures you are well informed as to what to expect and what you have to do as well. The follow up is excellent. My last surgery was at Pindarra Private Hospital on the Gold Coast. Once in hospital prior to surgery Matthew greeted me as I entered the operating theatre along with his anaesthetist. Both ensured I was fully aware of what was going to happen in surgery. Once back in the ward, Matthew visited me every morning in his black hoodie and shorts, even surgeons have to find time to work out checking to ensure I was on track and happy. His team from The Pyhsio Next visited every day ensuring I was up and moving and doing the appropriate exercises. The first four days of a walking and water only diet was a bit plain, but I recovered from the surgery quickly and went home feeling very well indeed despite the lumber fusion and disc replacement. Post Operative care and appointments are arranged by both the office team and The Physio Next Door. Three months after surgery I am now permitted to resume my normal life. Hopefully I will not need further surgery but if I do I cannot think of a better orthopaedic surgeon than Matthew Scott Young. I have every confidence in him.
I was referred to Dr Mathew Scott-Young in 2021 by some work mate whom highly recommended him. At the initial appointment, I found Mathew to be extremely well informed and knowledgeable. Polite and friendly, speaking to me in a manner I could understand showing examples of the procedure. I had my back surgery and during recovery at Pindara Hospital Mathew was there every morning with a reassuring and positive smile. I would definitely recommend that anyone suffering chronic back pain contact Dr Mathew Scott-Young and get an appraisal. Nigel J.
Went to Dr Matthew Scott-Young practice with an issue with my neck. DR MSY is excellent, clearly very experienced. His team are incredible, from reception to his nurses, they are very professional, on the ball and knowledgable. Thanks Ladies
