There are some good staff there and some bad staff there! It is hit and miss. The process of obtaining recognition of Italian citizenship by descent and an Italian passport was long and painful, and quite expensive! I nearly gave up many times as there seemed to be one hurdle after another. I had to make several appointments and each time I saw someone different they gave me different information! In the end I succeeded in obtaining both and became an expert at making the online bookings. I believe staff there should be more helpful in general as some were quite incompetent and very rude. They are there to provide a service, and presumably to assist people, so they need to develop an attitude of compassion and understanding towards people. Some of the people who work there should take a leaf out of the Australian ethos of giving people a fair go and providing good customer service.

Went in for the first time here and I must say the service received was fantastic! The location was easy to find and if taking public transport the tram stops practically outside the door. Leave about 10 minutes to get through at Reception as the receptionist is very thorough and makes sure everything is in order for you. Service is in general is really good and the staff take the time to explain the process and provide advise and assurance. I met with Antonio back-filling for Roberto and the service received was exemplary! I'm a very very happy customer today! Best way to contact the embassy is through email and my email was answered within a couple of hours.

I had thought the passport application process to be a straightforward one as it had been in the past, after all; but, to my considerable inconvenience (volleyed, as I was, between London and Melbourne trying to secure an online appointment), I found myself dealing with two new administrative processes which have turned out to be insurmountable stumbling blocks. One is the website, a supposedly all-encompassing repository of consulate-related information (anticipating any possible query one may have), returning results predictably based on simple keyword structures which never address my questions. Once a keyword matching any website text is located in an email query, it returns a reply email directing back to the website. The other is the AIRE online application form, SECOLI/Fast It, which still records my yet-to-change status for a presumably essential step to passport or identity card registration as “Presentata/Submitted” – in short, there has been no processing progress of any kind for eight months, during which I lost working opportunities in the UK. Not to mention that consulate services have dispensed with both email for direct contact and two-language call centre telephone numbers (apparently because the service is now efficient...), so that the only way to contact the Italian consulate has been to go there in person. I was grateful for that, because the person I found on the other side of the office counter, Sig. Antonio Scarati, was most understanding and helpful and made sure I walked away with an online appointment for my passport – on the day!

My first appointment at the consulate was very bad. The officer didn't give me clear information on what I required for my citizenship application. As a result, I spent more money on documents that I didn't end up needing. It was not a very enjoyable customer experience. But this morning I met with Elio Mancini for my second appointment and it was excellent. Elio was much more helpful and answered all my questions clearly. Thanks Elio.

I had a very good experience at the Italian Consulate in Melbourne. Marco and Antonio helped me with application and were both very patient and kind. It was a pleasure dealing with both of them as they made my experience very smooth. Thank you!!
