Story

Recently renovated and now voted one of the TOP 10 HOSTELS in Australia, the Civic Guest House is a friendly charming hostel in the heart of Townsville offering clean, safe and cosy accommodation for the budget conscious traveller. Free Wi-Fi and a friendly service is what we consider a must. We also offer free transport to/from the Ferry and Greyhound bus terminal 4 times a day (10am, 11am, 2pm and 7pm).

Our aim is to provide our guests with a comfortable and quiet place to stay in a relaxed and friendly environment. You can chill out in the lounge room, prepare a meal in our large communal kitchen, or have a game of chess in the new game room.

Conveniently located in a quiet street close to Townsville's CBD, The Civic Guest House Backpackers Hostel gives you a broad choice of room options ranging from shared dorms to private double rooms with ensuite.

The location is great and convenient for getting around. The room and bathrooms were very clean, and the staff kindly offered us blankets, which we appreciated. Having a fridge in the room was a great convenience, and the towels were fresh and clean.nnUnfortunately, despite these positives, I can only give this place one star. The shared kitchen was often left dirty by other guests, and the noise levels were terrible. If you’re hoping for a good night’s sleep, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. Quiet hours did not seem to be enforced, with large groups talking loudly outside our room and in common areas at all hours of the night. The walls are also extremely thin, making it easy to hear everything going on around you.
I had a really good stay at this hostel. I arrived a bit late, but the reception staff were still there and were incredibly warm and welcoming, which I really appreciated. The rooms were very clean, and the overall atmosphere was calm and relaxed. It’s also very quiet at night, which made it easy to rest.nnOne small suggestion would be to add curtains to the beds for a bit more privacy. But overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it.
Stayed at Civic for 2 nights and I was so glad I did. The whole atmosphere of the hostel is really homely and family like! It’s very clean, the rooms are secure and bed are comfy. The kitchen is perfect. The social aspect of the hostel really what made it stand out, everyone was just chilling and having a good time, long or short stay residents were just like family. Thanks!
Really enjoyed my stay at Civic guesthouse. Fridges in the rooms makes storing your cold items convenient. The AC in the room worked great. The kitchen and common areas were well maintained and the staff were great. The free shuttle service to the ferry dock was a highlight of my trip. The hostel is very close to Woolies but a little further from the nightlife scene.
Stayed here so we could take a day trip to Magnetic Island.nnThe staff were friendly, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. We had a double room without a sink, although most of the other rooms appeared to have one. Having a fridge in the room was a nice bonus.nnUnfortunately, the kitchen area was very dirty, almost to the point that I didn’t want to use it. Guests didn’t clean up after themselves, so we had to wash anything we wanted to use. Items were also rarely put back where they belonged.nnAnother downside was the noise. Quiet hours were not respected, and people were often loud in the rear common areas until the early hours of the morning.nnOverall, if you’re looking for a place to get a good night’s rest, and make use of the kitchen, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.
