Story

Recently renovated and now voted one of the TOP 10 HOSTELS in Australia, the Civic Guest House is a friendly charming hostel in the heart of Townsville offering clean, safe and cosy accommodation for the budget conscious traveller. Free Wi-Fi and a friendly service is what we consider a must. We also offer free transport to/from the Ferry and Greyhound bus terminal 4 times a day (10am, 11am, 2pm and 7pm).

Our aim is to provide our guests with a comfortable and quiet place to stay in a relaxed and friendly environment. You can chill out in the lounge room, prepare a meal in our large communal kitchen, or have a game of chess in the new game room.

Amazing hostel in a really ideal location. Impeccably clean rooms and bathrooms, really doesn’t feel like a hostel at all, more like a home. Pool is outstanding, very modern and clean! Staff are so friendly and welcoming as well so that really really raises the quality of the hostel. Very well worth the price, if not exceeding it! My friend and I loved it so much we went back again!
About my experience I can say in the beginning all was good not excellent.nI lived there almost 4 months and issues like bedbugs, housekeeping team and poor kitchen schedule was terrible.nThe people who lived there was amazing, like is a very good experience if you arrive and you want to know people that’s the perfect place and is a very good location.nI experiment a very bad experience with one person of the staff, very unprofessional with me and some of the people who lived there.nI suggest lived there just 2 months and try to get another place like apartment or house to lived and get a perfect experience in townsville.nnAny answer from the hostel is the same guys who is unprofessional with more people, just follow my suggestion.
Nice hostel for a couple of days but pretty basic and could do with a deep clean in places. The first building with the lobby, bathrooms, and communal area has just been renovated so perhaps the other areas are to come. Kitchen was very hot and stuffy with no windows and quite limited on cutlery, but had most things and an oven - rare!. The shared dorms were spacious enough with lockers, fridges and en suite, but fridge was mank with mouldy food and overfilled, bathroom needed a deep clean, and there were 4 lockers to 7 people. A lot of people coming and going or staying long term. Good enough for a couple of nights though, convenient for castle hill lookout and getting to Magnetic.
Stayed there for a total of two weeks and tried different rooms. Overall the rooms were good, some had private bathrooms which is definitely a plus.nThe hostel in itself is super clean, same for the shared bathroom/toilets.nKitchen can get busy at rush hour but you’ll always find a spot to cook.nOverall the best part was definitely the interactions with the staff, as each and every one of them are super kind and helpful.nWould recommend staying there 100%
My experience with Civic started off well. It all seemed like a normal place to stay, friendly, quite clean and peaceful staff.nA lovely woman assisted me and took me to my room.nThe first night, I tried to sleep at around 11:00pm but no one was in the room, the lights were on and people were having fun outside on a Tuesday night.nThe following nights were the same but I understood that was the dynamic of the hostel and I chose to be tolerant. I even saw one of the staff members smoking and having fun with the clients at 11pm another night Thursday.nOn Saturday, I had the opportunity to do my first shift at the stadium, many people were working there from the hostel so afterwards everyone including me had some drinks and a chat in the common areas after 10pm.nThe following morning, to my surprise, the same staff member who had been having fun with other people, kicked me and my friend out of the hostel.nHe was very unfair because he hadn’t warned us before and he wouldn’t accept any other type of solution. So we found ourselves with no place to stay.nI believe that was an utterly disproportionate measure to deal with our situation.
