Browsing through the overflowing shelves of this local Korean grocery, we pick up a few Asian soft drinks and make our way to the rear of the store, the "hidden" entrance to Chickilia. Our Korean friends first introduced this restaurant to us many years ago, swearing by the tastiness of their chicken wings. They're not wrong, and we've been going back ever since. Chickilia makes some of the best fried chicken wings in Melbourne, maybe even in the whole of Australia. Order at the counter and take a seat, soon the main event is upon us. The wings themselves come in two flavours, Soy & Garlic and Sweet Chilli. True enthusiasts can ask for each variant to be made "spicy", adding a real kick and a real depth of flavour. The Soy & Garlic is our go-to wing: a thin, impressively crispy skin protecting the succulent flesh beneath. Each bite reveals tastes of salty, sweet and a hint of umami, a light garlic sensation lingering throughout. Order the Sweet Chilli version and you're treated to some finger licking goodness: the wings are coated in a thick, sweet and sour glaze: make sure you're not wearing white as it'll be hard pressed not to make a mess. One small regret is that Chickilia doesn't have a liquor license, a real pity as it's so easy to imagine an entire sunny afternoon lost to these wings and some beer. No matter: Chickilia is a real gem of a restaurant, and should be on everyone's list.

Love their fried chicken in a sense that the coating wasn't too thick but yet crispy when fried. Doesn't taste like its been overly marinated but enough to give full flavour when bitten into. They have a variety of other popular korean dishes like their kimchi chigae and also their army hot pots which is quite delectable, however in comparison to other korean joints its rather pricey. A couple could easily spend over $50 for just a medium fried chicken and a hot pot.

Bibimbap, Bulgogi and fried chicken were all great. Kochujang Sauce for the Bibimbap was sweet and tangy without being incredibly hot. The staff was friendly and attentive. There's an Asian market that you have to go thru to get to Chickilia, pretty fun to buy ingredients or lollies on the way out.
