Story

Cataract on Paterson is a blend of classic interiors with a modern twist! We offer one of Launceston’s most unique dining venues. Centrally located on the edge of the CBD, the venue boasts industrial design paired with contemporary cuisine, casual polished service and an elegant yet quirky charm that crafts a dining experience unlike any other.

Our emphasis is to highlight Tasmanian food products, produce superior flavours and offer our guests sincere value. We proudly support Tasmanian farmers by sourcing our produce from a variety of local producers and farm gate outlets.

We are home to the Stonegrill dining experience! Stonegrill is a new, exciting & unique interactive dining experience that presents your meal cooking on a 400°C volcanic stone at your table. The unique method & high temperature, sears in all the natural juices & nutrients, enhancing the full flavours & tenderness of your meal. Stonegrill is internationally recognised as one of the healthiest methods of cooking, as all produce is completely trimmed of fats & no added oils are used. Your meal will remain hot & enjoyable, allowing you to dine at leisure, with every bite as hot & delicious as the first as the stone remains very hot for approx. 35 minutes & hot for over an hour.

We are open for dinner 7 nights per week from 5.00pm until late and lunch Friday and Sunday from 12 noon. Reservations are highly encouraged.

We were travelling from Sydney and found this restaurant on Google. The food was amazing, the environment was cosy and all the staff were lovely. Especially a waiter called Patric, was amazing at his job, he was very knowledgeable and friendly. His service really made our dining experience a higher level. Highly recommended.

As Melbourne foodies. We were blown away with the hospitality and customer service at this place. We got the seafood platter and oh my!! Nuff said we were back 2days later to try something else on the menu and had to give their special Easter desserts ago. I’ll let the pictures do the talking!nYou’ve not been to Launceston if you haven’t been to this place!nKeep up the great work!

Probably the first time that I've had pork ribs with no to little flavour. I had the Bourbon and Coke Pork Ribs. Everything the menu states but the flavour of the meat is absolutely braised out of it. There was a lick of bourbon and Coke but it was fleeting at best. Other than the food, everything was great! Service was attentive and extremely efficient, dinning area was comfortable and intimate.

We ended up eating here both nights we were in Launceston and really enjoyed it!nIt’s a wee bit pricey but we found that common in most restaurants.nThe first night we had the seafood platter for 2 pictured and it was huge and had plenty of variety.nThe second night we had the mix grill and a a Parma which were both very nice and great size!nThe desserts seem to be the big ticket item as them are unique and presented beautifully deconstructed apple pie picturednnWould recommend booking as it packs out!

We came for entree, main, desserts and cocktails. We aren't big eaters, though, so we usually share everything, and that's generally perfect for us.nnWe felt quite a bit of pressure to order more food from the wait staff, which made us feel a bit uncomfortable. I totally understand trying to maximise total spend per table, but even with one main, one entree, 2 cocktails, and 2 desserts, the bill ended up being pretty decent.nnWe had eaten at the black cow the night before, and the scallops were nowhere near the same league. They were super small and relatively tasteless- so that was disappointing.nnFor main, we had the Lamb Rissoni dish, and that was absolutely delicious!! Such a beautiful balance of flavours and textures. Yum!!nnThe cocktails were great. The desserts were basic but a bit fancy on the volcanic stone.nnI can see how this place would be very popular. I just wish we didn't feel that implied pressure to order more food.
