Went along with some break pads to put on my bike, made me feel empowered that I could care for my own bike and not have to take it to get repaired. Antony walked me through and showed me how to do one, then watched me do the other. Amazing service to have in the city for free to help make cycling affordable.
Fantastic service that I am very happy the council are funding. There ended up being quite a few people popping by when I was working on my bike there, and Anthony managed to help and teach everyone quite efficiently jumping between the different people and bike problems.
Been there today to fix a wheel that needed truing. Felt really welcome, the person there was super friendly and both taught me how to do it and took over the process when necessary.
The volunteer not only sorted my problem, but took time to teach me. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. Amazing free service funded by WCC.
Super friendly, super informative - very patient with beginners! Went above and beyond to address a couple of issues that I hadn’t even noticed as well, guided step by step. You’ll come away with valuable knowledge on how to keep your bike running!
These guys are really nice and this is an excellent public service, but I was quite surprised to find that almost the entirety of their capability was limited to extremely low-end and vintage bicycles. Here's a list of things that they aren't seemingly able to help with: Integrated or tapered headsets; Pressfit bottom brackets; Hydraulic disk brakes; Suspension linkages. For those not in the know, if you walk into a bike shop today probably 90% of bikes on display will have almost all of those parts. To be clear, this is in no way a discredit to the people that work there -- but they simply don't have the tools for mid and high end bikes. And no doubt - these tools are very specific and rather expensive. But the fact that the Council and Mechanical Tempest and whomever funds/donates money and time for these mechanics to work in Central Wellington has gone this far, and yet with just a little more public funding could have the capability to service so much more, I find a little frustrating. BikeSpace is the perfect way for people on a budget but with the desire to become closer to their bike, and I think the Council should consider its value in the broader context of Wellington's cycle infrastructure and cultue.
Helped me attach a kickstand to my bicycle - was struggling with my damaged allen key. Also appreciated the additional maintenance info!
Very helpful and very professional.
Super helpful staff to help keep your bike on the go!
Had been riding around with wonky brakes for a while, quick stop at bikespace sorted that out. Thanks!
