Since we were visiting from the US, my bestie in Sydney arranged an outing to Southern Highlands and made sure we stopped for lunch at her favorite place. It was a cozy cute cafe inside a bookstore and on the premise of a winery estate. We ordered the grazing board, roasted pumpkin pizza and salad. We invited our driver to join the 3 of us for lunch and glad we did since the portion was HUGE!! We were a bit skeptical initially about the wines here since we are spoilt from Napa & Sonoma in our backyard but we were pleasantly surprised after ordering a bottle of Bendooley Estate Rosé. Excellent selection of dining choice made by my friend!
The Berkelouw Book Barn isn't just a bookstore, it's a full-blown sensory feast! Imagine wandering through a labyrinth of bookshelves stacked with every genre imaginable. But wait, there's more! This bookish paradise also boasts a restaurant that serves up seriously incredible food. We're talking melt-in-your-mouth dishes that pair perfectly with a glass of wine from their extensive selection.
We loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, dining amongst the books. We were here for lunch. The staff were very efficient and friendly. As we arrived before the lunch order started, I had the frangipani pear tart to ease my hunger. It was a lovely treat, moist and fruity. Lunch was the Atlantic salmon tartare very good, pumpkin risotto loved it, gnocchi acceptable and filling and chicken burger good and chips were chunky and nicely done. We enjoyed the experience but yes, it is pricey.
Great place to stop. Really nice book store and resturant combined. Had a lovely glass of wine and pizza in superb surroundings.
I've had this place bookmarked for months, but was quite disappointed when I got there. I hear "book barn" and imagine a happy place where I can pick up a book and enjoy beautiful surroundings while getting a coffee and sandwich. That's not what this place is trying to be. It's a fancy restaurant rather than a cafe at any time of day, and they'll make sure you know it. It seems set up for weddings / events with a bookstore added as an afterthought. Overall, I didn't get the feeling the people staffing it loved books or having customers.
I want more place like this! Beautiful country setting, a barn full of books and great food. Initially I thought there’s a café there, not aware it’s a full fledged restaurant. We were told the dinning space is more like a cafe setting in the morning. I wish there are more casual sitting space through the day just for coffee/snacks and book browsing.
Absolutely breathtaking. The atmosphere at this venue is like something out of a movie. The staff were so helpful in assisting me to find a book I'd been after for a while. The hospitality staff were super accommodating even though they had a wedding on at 3 and we arrived at around quarter past two, they found us a table and whipped up a delicious lunch. I can't recommend this place high enough. Well worth a visit!
Absolutely beautiful building and a wide range of 2nd hand books. Food is very average but it has a lovely atmosphere. Wine was average too unfortunately. It's ashame the food wasn't better. Highly recommend making a booking for a table.
My wife and two daughters went to the book barn today for father's day lunch and were thoroughly disappointed. While the venue is beautiful and the service was friendly the food was terrible. We ordered a kids pizza, kids chicken chips and salad, beef cheeks, and scotch fillet, and a roast cauliflower Salad. After waiting forty minutes, the food came. My wife's beef cheeks were simply boiled fatty beef, no flavour at all, the roast potatoes undercooked. We sent it back. My scotch fillet which I ordered medium rare was less than a cm thick, cooked well done, just grey all over. The broccolini it came with was boiled, no olive oil, butter or seasoning on it. We sent it back. The kids pizza I would wager was on a frozen base as it was cooked through. Kids demolished it. The salad with the chicken and chips was just leaves, no dressing and bone dry so I'd guess not even washed. The cauliflower salad I ordered never arrived but was still on the bill, we did get it removed. So all in all we spent $68 on two glasses of wine, two kids meals and a bottle of water for the worst dining experience we've had in years and no food.
The food was bad, the bookstore mostly carries pop modern books, and the books "of value" we found are not worthwhile, at least not here. Where do I even start, the service was good but the food was so bad I don't know how they can charge such high prices for this absolute dog food. Actually there were dogs around and they didn't even seem to be interested in the food. Overcooked, or just bland and disappointing, but the service was good, they only forgot one order so it's not bad. I do not recommend this place at all for books or food. The only thing you can get here is maybe a coffee table paperweight. The older collection of books they had, and I don't mean the new publishing of older written books, printed on hardback and made to /look old/ - yes they had those, disappointing. The actual aged collection are not written by any authors of value so no loss here. Also how are people giving this place 5 stars? Have they never left the countryside? Is this the only restaurant they've ever been to? I find it hard to justify even giving this a 2.
