Story

The Bark Mill is a restored mill and museum in Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. The mill is Australia’s only restored Black Wattle Bark Mill, and possibly the only one in the world. The fully working mill demonstrates how bark from local black wattle trees was once crushed for export across the world. The bark is the basic ingredient used in tanning.

The mill was established in 1885 and continued operation until the early 1960s.

A visit here gives a fascinating insight into the ancient art of milling bark. The museum depicts the early history of the oldest rural municipality in Australia. Individual working displays depict life as it was in the 1800s. The descendants of the original settlers have loaned many items and photographs to the exhibition.

The Bark Mill complex is opened daily.

In addition to the Museum is a Tavern and Bakery making this the ideal place for a stop. The tavern and bakery cater for all meals. A large car park, good access for disabled, well appointed rest rooms and children’s playground completes the Bark Mill Tavern, Bakery and Museum complex.

The Bark Mill is one hour 40 minutes’ drive (134 kilometres/84 miles) from Hobart.

What a beast of a meal! We ordered the special of the day a chorizo, pesto, parmigiana. Was beautifully cooked and delicious. Real CHUNK of chicken not that processed stuff and we ordered sweet potato chips which were to die for. Thankyou!
Very nice place, the food was wonderful, the lamb omg. The oyster was good too. I definitely recommend!
It appeared that the rest of Swansea was shut.nBark Mill it was.nThe empty plate is surely a sign of a great feed.nSteak sangar with the lot. An absolute stunner. Egg done well, just runny enough with crispy bottom - bit like me.nA good whack of bacon, and a proper meaty minute type steak - no gristle.nLook, I could wax lyrical about everything, but suffice to say, mouth and stomach stuffed and hunger sated.nGet in there and give em a go. As Del would say, Lovely Jubbly !!
Love the atmosphere. Stopped en route to & from Freycinet. Busy 1st visit, & long wait for breakfast which when we eventually inquired about, & was delivered just warm. Quality big breakfast, though not when served warm/cooI. Likely it was left for the table service ? 2nd visit, not crowded. Great coffee & snack. Seems understaffed for peak/busy times?
Ordered the beef cheeks which were apparently 18 hours slow cooked- what a joke! So tough a steak knife was needed after two mouth fulls it was just so bad you could not eat it.nWhen we took it back to the counter one of the ladies said this was not the first complaint about the beef cheeks. A head bar maid came over and said she would let the head chef know, he wasn't in this night, and walked away.n$35.00 for such rubbish and no apology or mention of a refund. Avoid this place so many better options.
