Story

Animal Welfare League Qld (AWLQ) is a charity founded on the Gold Coast in 1959 with the core mission of rehoming abandoned and surrendered companion animals.

AWLQ operates four rehoming centres in South East Queensland, caring for up to 17,500 animals each year. AWLQ also works in close partnership with city and rural council pounds to re-home animals in those areas. AWLQ works with state government, rescue groups, local councils and the community to improve the outcomes for abandoned pets and are nationally recognised for our unique and innovative programs, initiatives and rehoming strategies.

AWLQ has a zero euthanasia policy on all healthy, treatable and sociable animals, giving them a second chance at life.

Adopted our beautiful cats from here last year in December, first and best cats I have ever owned. Couldn’t ask for a more amazing fur baby to join our family.nnStaff are so friendly, and it feels good to donate to the AWLQ.
I went to adopt a cat that I found on their website and ended up adopting a different cat. If you go online, they will have photos of all the animals up for adoption along with a brief bio about the animals. The staff here are amazing and take great care of the animals. You can tell they care about the animals and want the best for them. They were super helpful with information as well. When I visited the cats they all had their own cages and a large room to roam around in with fans going and plenty of toys and food. The adoption process was easy and walked out with my cat same day. They let you know about any medical conditions and all of their up to date medicals. The cat we adopted is so loving! Will definitely be back to get another kitty!
The animals here are well looked after, the facilities are clean and it's a wonderful place to volunteer your time!
The rudeness of a staff member ensured I did not adopt from here. Her tone with so abrupt and her manner was less than pleasant. Telling potential customers that if a cat doesn't come out to greet them then that cat is not for them, it wants to go home with somebody else. She J spoke to several customers quite rudely whilst I was there. Two other people commented about her manner. AWL, I think this woman is bad for your business and would be better suited in a role where she has no public contact. My family will not be back.
I recently drove two hours from Brisbane to the AWLQ centre with the hope of adopting an 11-year-old dog who has been at the centre for 48 days. While driving down I tried calling them six times over the course of an hour, but no one answered the phone.nnI arrived ten minutes before their closing time, only to be told that I couldn't adopt the dog because the process takes 30 minutes. Instead, they offered that I could look at the dog. I explained how long it took me to get there and that I wouldn't be able to return until Friday. I even asked if I could put a deposit down to hold him, but they said they couldn't accommodate that.nnI left work early and made a significant effort to provide a home for this dog, but the lack of flexibility and poor communication made it impossible. This was a deeply frustrating experience, especially knowing that the dog has been waiting for a home for so long. Looks like I'll be back on Friday.
