Wonderfully preserved Aboriginal bora ring. Site well maintained and signed...can recommend.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Our indigenous culture is rich and often unknown. In many cases it is right under noses. I recently visited the Samford Bora ring just outside of Samford. This Bora ring is connected with a smaller ring, is considered to be the most complete and best-preserved Bora ground in South-East Queensland. These Bora grounds were sacred meeting places for the tribes. Here took place the manhood Kippa initiation ceremonies, at which the presence of women was forbidden. The Samford Bora ring is 26m in diameter, enclosed by a raised earthen mound which you can make out in this photo. From this central ring a sunken path, 700m long and known as the Sacred Way, is linked to a second smaller ring. This path is still there. In the ceremonial Bora rings, neighbouring tribes gathered regularly to celebrate and perform important tribal rituals. At the Samford Bora Ground the boys, age 12 to 15 were transformed into young men—Kippas. Their noses were pierced with a small sharp spear and then plugged. The boys received tribal body paint markings and were given new names. This ceremony lasted for several weeks and marked their official graduation into manhood. It was a humble place to visit and reflect. As I was leaving, a goanna made its presence known and stayed still long enough for me to photograph it.
A ceremonial Bora Ring of the Jinibara people. One of few remaining traces of the original inhabitants. It probably deserves something nicer than the faded placard and rusty barbed wire fence around the strip of parkland it's in. Though I'm not sure if the treatment is intentional to discourage tourists as some writings I found seem to suggest that the sites are sacred and that filling them with tourists could be considered disrespectful. I think it's worthwhile to know that it's here as most other traces of the natives were erased long ago.
I lived close by never knew it was there. Beautiful sacred spot. No facilities.
Beautiful historical spot
