Thomas Joseph Byrnes died in September 1898 at the age of 38 when he was Premier, Chief Secretary and Attorney General of Queensland. This is Brisbane's first statue, sculpted in bronze, by Sir Bertram Mackennal. It was unveiled at at Petrie Bight, at the junction of Boundary and Wickham Sts, on 22nd of August in 1902 by the Governor of Queensland. Lt General Sir Hubert Chermside. When Centenary Place was constructed in 1924, the statue was moved to its present position in the park.
