Steve & Lynn Dewar have taken over the iconic Art Ducko site, given it a make-over and launched Tides Restaurant & Cafe. The new decor is crisp, clean and fresh, and reflective of its prime beachfront location.
The Dewars have been self employed in hospitality for 30 years and have owned and managed a variety of food and beverage outlets on the North Shore over this period. Steve & Lynn were successful in setting up two beachfront cafe/restaurants in Beachfront Lane in Browns Bay (Bayside Bar & Grill - now Flax/Saint and Saltwater Jack's -now Catch 22) in the late 1990's at a time when the seaside location of the area was very much undervalued. After selling Bayside Bar & Grill in 2006, they owned a Takapuna restaurant for 18 months and then Steve had a contract to open new cafe franchises.
Steve & Lynn have lived in the Bays most of their lives - Lynn in Torbay since 1966 and Steve on the Shore since 1960. They are well known in the area and feel that their previous experience makes them ideally suited to opening a beachfront cafe/restaurant on the beach at Waiake. Their two children (young adults) also work in the business. It has been nearly 30 years since there was a daytime retail activity on the site and it is long overdue. The interest from locals in finally having a seaside cafe has been overwhelming.
Head Chef, Martin Durbridge, has worked with Steve for 7 years and brings a wealth of experience to the kitchen. The evening menu is based on top quality New Zealand produce, sourced locally where possible. Martin has always put a lot of time into ensuring that our steaks are properly aged and cooked to perfection. Our lamb is always export quality. Fish is provided by Moana Pacific - only the freshest is selected. Martin's seafood chowder is always popular, brimming with scallops, salmon, fish, mussels and shrimps.
Steve still spends plenty of time cooking, as well, and admits to being addicted to the buzz of a busy kitchen. Its the passion that you need to run a successful cafe/restaurant. We invite you to share that passion in a fantastic beachfront location.
