Located at the Bastion Point of the east Auckland near Mission Bay, Michael Joseph Savage Gardens is a pleasant and relaxing park maintained by the Auckland city council. Designed by local architects Tibor Donner and Anthony Bartlett, Fletcher Construction company finished construction of this park in March of 1942. It was built in memory of former New Zealand Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage who headed the first Labour government in the 1935 general election. Savage was also involved with the formation of the New Zealand Labour Party in July 1916. He was the 23rd prime minister of New Zealand. The park is located on an elevated ground, therefore provides beautiful views of the Auckland city, Waitemata harbour, Rangitoto island and the Hauraki gulf. It is a popular tourist attraction for both international visitors and locals. The central park area is centred around a large sunken garden, which are adorned with hedges and variety of seasonal flowers. There is a large but shallow pool located in the centre of the garden. The main feature is the obelisk tower, base of which has an epitaph embedded to honour the late Prime Minister. It has good toilet facilities, ample parking spaces and quite a few benches to sit and relax. It is also popular among dog walkers.
Michael Savage look out is one of the greatest places you can visit in the area for scenery fantastic views of the harbor and Auckland city. You're also very close to one of the Maori meeting locations and if you have the inclination you can certainly visit it as well.
A very beautiful memorial park in Auckland with beautiful flowers and green grass. I love this peaceful and relaxing place very much.
What a spot! So beautiful both scenery wise and plant wise. Lots of parking. Easy to access. There were a bunch of walkways but we didn't have the time to explore. We'll be back for sure.
One of the most beautiful places to visit in Auckland. How profound way to keep the memory on Michael Joseph Savage.
Nice view but the path to Mission Bay is kind of hidden
Would definitely go back to check out the views again.
