I visited this gyukatsu spot with my wife for an unexpectedly special celebration. The place had a cozy, warm, wooden interior that felt very inviting. Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded for a Friday evening. We got a nice window seat tucked behind a tree, which added to the relaxed atmosphere.nnWe ordered their popular 180g gyukatsu - it was tender and really reminded us of the kind we had in Japan. The dipping sauces were great, and everything came with a good variety of sides. We both loved it. It was more than enough for my wife, who had been feeling hungrier than usual.nnI went with the tonkatsu, which was a solid, crispy pork cutlet. I especially liked the nutty flavour of the salad dressing that came with it. As a starter, we shared the spicy cauliflower, which was just the right portion. The gochujang-based sauce paired nicely with it.nnOverall, it’s a great spot for a date - definitely recommended for couples or anyone looking to enjoy an authentic gyukatsu experience in Auckland.
Had dinner here and the steak was absolutely divine. The lovely staff guided us with how to prepare it and the saké pairing was just perfect. Would definitely go back again
I normally don’t write reviews, but I wanted to share some honest feedback with the chef. I ordered a few set menus which cost over $250+ and was really surprised by how extremely small the portions were. For each set, it was just three pieces of sushi, two rolls, and a few small entrées — with an overly sweet salmon served as the main, without rice. On top of that, they were out of dessert. Honestly, it didn’t feel worth the price.
We come to Ichigo Ichie regularly. If you value quality ingredients, a warm welcoming atmosphere then I highly recommend eating here. We normally take a Tapas approach and order the small plates, have draught Asahi each, and maybe a cheeky Sake to share. But Saturday we decided to try the Gyukatsu steak dish. Personally I don’t think it’s expensive. It’s an experience and a fun dish, as you cook your beautifully prepared steak on the hot stone. There are side dishes of pickles, rice and a crunch salad with delicious sauces as an accompaniment. Times are hard for small local restaurants. These guys have kept their standards, quality of ingredients and continue to offer fabulous service. Support local, so we can continue to be able to have these great local restaurants. Highly recommend.
