Very high level of cultural significance, traditional and historical associations intrinsic to this area.
Annexed from hapu of Ngati Rangiwewehi via Native Land Court processes in 1890’s.
Main spring known as Te Puna-a-Hangarua, named after Hangarua a chieftainess of Ngati Rangiwewehi
The area was heavily cultivated with gardens on both sides of the river and was a rich source of food. The river also provided kokopu, inanga, toitoi and koura.
Stream originally known as Kaikaitahuna.
