Glacier Kayaking - paddle between ice bergs and views of Aoraki Mt Cook in our double kayaks fitted with sturdy outriggers for perfect stability.

Story

Glacier Kayaking. They are wonderful trips. The journeys take in some incredible scenery and are really quite awe-inspiring. All our boats are double sea kayaks and are fitted with outriggers on both sides for perfect stability. We call these “Floaties”.
The Tasman Glacier Lake kayaking trip has been named in the top 33 NZ Lonely Planet Ultimate Adventures and top 1000 in the world!

The Tasman Glacier Lake Kayaking - $155 per person. 9.30am

Trips depart from The Old Mountaineers’ Café, Restaurant & Bar (next door to the DOC visitor information centre). Can you let us know your contact details and where you will be staying while in the Aoraki Mount Cook area.

The Tasman Glacier Lake: 3-4 hours
Minimum number: 3

This trip is an adventure for the kayaker and provides an opportunity to meet ice bergs face to face. New Zealand’s longest glacier winds its way down the Southern Alps for nearly 30km before culminating at the terminal lake. The transition from glacier to lake produces impressive icebergs on a regular basis; this truly is ‘big berg country’.

We have limited seats. Early bookings are essential on this spectacular adventure.

You will need to bring the following:

1 Sun hat
2 Sun glasses
3 Warm clothing (just in case there is a cool breeze)
4 Suncream
5 Sturdy shoes. (runners etc)
6 Camera
7 Wind shell

Larger museum than expected. Great info for the whole family about the history, culture and nature of the Mt Cook area. Fascinating gadgets, tools and photographs are displayed. Highly recommend visiting it before going for a walk in the region!
Learnt some of the history of NZ, quite interesting. They do sell some clothes, raincoats here, i think the price is quite reasonable
Loved learning about the culture and the history of the mountain and area. Such wonderful helpful staff too. My son loved completing the Doc ranger guide book. Pity the swing bridges were closed but we'll be back.
Very informative museum covering a whole range of topics from Maori legends of the mountain range formation to early expeditions to the geology and ecology of the area. Highly recommend visiting before or after a hike in the region!
Accidentally went to the Alpine Centre instead of here at first… This place is great ! Lots to read and see, free admission. The DOC officers are really helpful for any questions about the area as well. I’d recommend this over the Alpine Centre ! But the Alpine Centre does have a theatre that plays shows which is very neat !
One of the oldest cafe of Mount cook. They have a limited number of items in the menu like burgers, pizzas, fries. But they are the only ones which opens by 10 am early. And closes by 7 pm. They have great burgers. They will provide The dine-in and outside the cafe benches behind the cafe with some awesome mountain views.
Another beautifully curated information centre with so much history and artifacts about Aoraki Mt Cook. Also a good shop and a pleasant atmosphere, I was very sorry the big picture window was only full of clouds, but I know that is beyond your control!
Love this visitor centre, lots to see and read and heaps of information about Aoraki national park, I had enjoyed my time.. Would definitely come back!
A pretty decent exhibition, but it's a bit limited. I thought that there would be more about Sir Edmund Hillary, as well as some photos or videos of the views from the tops of Aoraki & Mount Tasman. Overall, it's still pretty good though.
Great stopover for getting more information on weather hiking and knowing a bit of everything in hiking and mount cook
