Il ghiacciaio Franz Josef è un ghiacciaio lungo 12 chilometri situato nel Westland National Park sulla costa occidentale dell'Isola del Sud, in Nuova Zelanda. Insieme al ghiacciaio Fox 20 chilometri più a sud, è l'unico che scende dalle Alpi meridionali fino a meno di 300, in mezzo alla vegetazione della foresta pluviale temperata.L'area circostante i due ghiacciai fa parte del Te Wahipounamu, un sito dichiarato patrimonio dell'umanità. Il fiume che esce dal ghiacciaio Franz Josef è noto col nome di fiume Waiho.

Fun and exciting. It was so lucky to have such great weather for see the beautiful view of the glacier. It looked dangerous but safe with the gears.

Magic place to visit. We took a helicopter ride with Heli line and our pilot was awesome. The views are amazing the glacier landing is something I will always remember. If you're going to NZ this is a must visit place.

What a wonderful experience from start to finish. Very professional, warm. welcoming and accommodating. Poppy was our pilot and a great host. Yes the experience is an expense but well worth it for seeing the two glaciers and putting the mountain range magnitude into perspective. Highly recommended.

Came here as part of a helihike. Quite the experience, definitely recommend.

I think this place is over-rated. Took 30 mins to drive 13km up the winding mountain roads. A bit disappointed as it has nothing really fantastic here. Would expect it to be more interesting though. Not recommended if you don’t really like mountains and rocks!

The glacier is amazing -There are plenty of various trekking routes but none for understandable reasons , get you near to the actual glacier. Heli / trekking excursions are available but booked out months in advance and coming with a hefty price tag of least $500 - $600 pp.  We did a 30min helicopter ride over both glaciers & landing on Fox to take photos for about 8mins - it was truly a fantastic experience.  The actual town of Franz Josef - there is nothing to do there and when we visited jan 2023 everywhere had acute staff shortages meaning delays to all types of food /drink service.

We went here on a heli hike and really enjoyed the experience.

If you have limited time and can't afford a helicopter there are better things to see. Yes the valley is cool and there are a few waterfalls but what you can see of the glacier from the top car park is all you can see from the top of the forest path as it looks like since 2020 the river changed direction and the old path is gone . So you can see a tiny bit of ice which doesn't warrant the effort if you are travelling just for this. I visited in 2000 and was able to walk straight onto to the ice with a group and it was pretty amazing so it's probably 5 stars if you get in a helicopter etc.  The picture is Peters pool and the white bit is all that you will see of the glacier if you take the forest walk.

An absolute must see. Totally worth getting stuck on the mountain for 3 hours waiting for cloud to clear for the helicopter. Weather can change at the drop of a hat. Truly an amazing experience & no photo will do it justice. Just go!
