Eksdale reserve is located between Glenfield and Birkdale suburbs in the North Shore region of greater Auckland. I would say this reserve is the pair of lungs of Glenfield and Birkdale, as the lush green patch right in the centre of this suburban precinct cleaning the Co2 emitted by the sorrounding urban dwellers. The reserve extends to about 74ha and is one of the most unique urban eco systems in the Auckland ecological landscape. It also has connections to the few remaining salt water mixed swamps in Auckland. There are multiple entrances to the reserve. On the east side, it can be accessed from Domain Road and Glenfield Road. And from Hiwihau Place in the centre, and Eskdale Road and Brunton Place from the west. From north you can enter the reservve from Kaipātiki Road.nnThis easy, shady bush walk is perfectly suitable for anyone, particularly on hot summer days. In the winter, parts of the track get muddy, but most parts are gravel laid so it is not too bad. Mountain biking and dogs on leash allowed. The total length of the tracks is about two to three km.nnThis native bush thrives with nikau palms, young kauri trees and ponga tree ferns and the Kaipatiki Stream runs along this reserve. In the spring or after heavy rain, you can see a little waterfall jusy after you accessed the reserve from Eksdale side.
The outer loop track doesn't have steps and is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. We recommend wheelchair users have assistance as there are some sections with a slight gradient. There are a number of tracks through the reserve. A primary track links to other reserves to the north-west. Pedestrian access is from Eskdale, Glenfield and Domain roads. You will need to park on the road. Good exercise
Awesome to find a good bush walk so close to town that is off-leash for dogs. Judging from the reviews it is popular, but we almost had it to ourselves. Be prepared for a bit of mud. Waterfall near the middle is pretty.
What was once a real trail with a feeling of nature has now become a cement & stones footpath. Where before you encountered many birds now you find people emptying their dogs, but don't worry they package the poo in colorful plastic bags and leave them around if you require a take away after you enjoyed finding them on the path. All in the love of NATURE. A shame for there are many volunteers doing a great work clearing the invasive species and freeing the ground amongst the trees. This great work is then nulled by the new breed of nature lovers with their latte and untrained dogs, left to wander everywhere in spite of the fact that a reserve should be a place reserved for the local wildlife birds not dogs
