Story

Nestled in a laneway just off Clarendon street in South Melbourne is Wynyard Café, little sister to Giddiup Café on Coventry street.

Taking its cue from Giddiup, which is connected to design shop Vincent2, Wynyard Café occupies a space adjoining Japanese homewares store Made In Japan.

A dynamic sawtooth roof with full width windows fills the space with abundant natural light. Painted brickwork and concrete floors provide a rich textural setting.

The joinery elements such as the coffee station and central unit sit freely in the space, designed to appear as light furniture pieces.

The detailing takes its cue from Japanese furniture design, balancing form, colour and texture.

Dark framing elements add solidity and structure to the pieces while the textured speckled infill panels add colour and a sense of playfulness.

The dark wall unit grounds the space, defining the centre and heart of the café.

Here coffee is made, bread is cut and customers are served.

Linear plywood shelving elements sit against a midnight navy & matte tiles, adding finesse and depth.

The café fit out by Adele Bates Design is an exercise in simplicity, playfulness and restraint, allowing the space to compliment the elements within it, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
