Winstone Park Tennis Club is a well established, friendly club with five flood-lit astro-grass courts catering for social and competitive tennis.
Winstone Park Tennis Club was founded in 1936 on Mount Roskill Domain Board’s land at the base of Mount Roskill. The land was given to the people of Mount Roskill by the Late George Winstone. A small pavilion and courts were constructed at this time. Over the years a new pavilion was built and subsequently expanded, new courts were laid and lighting installed.
In 2005 the Club located to its current site on Harold Long Reserve to make way for the extension of State Highway 20. Five new flood lit astro grass courts were built and the old Men’s Mount Roskill Bowling Club building was used as our pavilion. In July 2012 the Club moved into our new pavilion adjacent to the courts.
Social tennis is a very large part of the fabric of the club and is well supported by the club members. The only requirement is correct footwear (non-marking soles on your shoes, so the courts are not damaged).
Tuesday night tennis starts at 5pm for those who can get away early from work, or have done so for good. Members come and go through the evening, with many of the early arrivals drifting towards the bar as the evening progresses. All five courts are normally in use, with players of all abilities taking part in scratch doubles games for 20 minutes at a time.
The volunteers running the board take great care to ensure that everyone gets to play at a level they are comfortable with, and games are always friendly.
The last few games usually wrap up around 7:30pm by which time many players have retired to join the social members in the bar.
On the first Tuesday of each month social tennis is followed by a BBQ (bring your own food), and this is always well attended.
Sunday afternoon tennis is a quieter affair, starting at 2:00 p.m. There can also be an opportunity to play some singles if not all of the courts are in use.
Tennis for Juniors runs from 4:00 pm on Friday afternoons.
Floodlights over the courts allow night tennis to be played up to 10:00 p.m.
