We have just completed the three day hike with Rhod and Alexi as our hosts. Everything was brilliantly organised and it was all such a joy. The accommodation was excellent and the food very good too my wife has a number of allergies but they looked after her with great care.nnI can highly recommend this trip.nnIt is well worth the money and it will be one of your highlights of New Zealand should you be from overseas
If you love the scenery and long walks in New Zealand, but are not into camping or freeze dried food, this three day supported trek is just perfect.nAnd unlike some of the other great walks, the Abel Tasman doesn’t include any serious mountain climbs.nSome years back we did the one day swing bridge walk with a water taxi drop off and pick up, and based on that decided to return and commit to the whole trek.nBased on this experience, the middle section is still the stand out, with the best scenery between Bark Bay and Apple Tree Bay.nBut we loved it all, and very much enjoyed having our gear taken ahead to the lodges, and then a hot shower, hot meal and a bar and drying room waiting for us after a hard walk.nThe rooms were good, the lodges in very good shape, and the food was much better than we’d expected.nStaff were superb and ensured everyone, of all abilities had a good time.nAnd if you find the walk a bit too much, you can skip a section and take the ferry to the next lodge and have a rest.
I couldn’t recommend Wilson’s highly enough. Everything was absolutely fabulous!nWe chose to go on the guided 3 day walk and it was all so well organised. Our overnight bags were waiting for us when we arrived at our pre-trip accommodation, so we were able to pack all we were taking the night before. Axel, the very friendly coach driver arrived on time the next day ready to take us to the Wilson’s HQ with a few other pick-ups on route. Luckily, we had been able to leave our other luggage at the hotel as we were returning to it after the walk. For others, and the self-drive people, there was plenty of time to sort themselves out at the HQ and for them to put their luggage into secure storage. This was also where we met our guide for the trip, Hazel.nWe were then taken to Kaiteriteri, onto a boat and cruised to Tōtaranui, where our walk commenced.nHazel was excellent guiding us along the track and providing lots of information of things we were encountering along the way, quickly identifying our walking speed and leading us along at a very comfortable pace. She was also very flexible with the walking plan, keeping an eye out for the self guided walkers and doubling back to help them out when one took the wrong turning.nBreakfast and evening meals were also very well organised, with us making our choice in advance, either at HQ or in the evening for the following day, so that the kitchen team could prepare them ready for us to all eat together. A picnic lunch was ready for collection before we set off for the day’s walk. The food at all the meals was gorgeous.nBoth the lodges we stopped at; Meadowbank Homestead and Torrent Bay Lodge, were a very high standard, clean, comfortable and relaxing.nAt the end of the walk there is a nice pub/restaurant to wait at while everyone finished their walk and ready for the coach ride back to our accommodation.
Great trip . Skipper Jim is amazing at his job. Loved the little boat. Winter is the time to explore. Tonga bay to medlands with a awesome stop at Awaroa for five mins absolutely loved this and will be doing another trip again soon
Walk in or catch a boat the Abel Tasman is well worth checking out. Stunning native bush, beautiful safe swimming beaches, and incredible views of the ocean. The track is easy and well formed for day walkers. Get advice from Wilson's or the locals and catch a water taxi or boat. Lots of options and they are all good! The photos don't lie.
