This place was a sheep farm in the 1940s and now it's a wondrous piece of native bush, much of it regenerating in a variety of species. It was covered in weeds and now you have to look for them. A tribute to years of hard work and dedication by staff and volunteers. There was one pair of NZ dotterels nesting unsuccessfully at the park before it was bought by the Auckland Regional Council and now with public and pest control there are many pairs successfully rearing chicks every year. The park was bought for about $750,000 in 1994 and now it is one of the nicest regional parks in the Auckland Region. Great hot water swimming at afternoon high tides in summer and a neat camping area. Loads of great walks and even a vineyard restaurant at the top of the park to reward the walk.

Beautiful place to camp. Loving the high tide down the beach, perfect for a swim. Would definitely go back there. Clean camping ground and helpful ranger is always around.

Whakanewha Regional Park! Come for the dotterels and stay for the.....er......dotterels. If small endangered coastal birds are your idea of fun then Whakanewha has it all. Waiheke's foremost dotterel nesting site has dotterels to suit even the most discerning bird watcher. There are also a fair few TREES about the place, but the dotterels are the main attraction.
