Story

Alcohol wasn’t easy to come by in these parts back in the mid 1800s, so a foolhardy yet enterprising ‘Bosun’, James Stewart, went about setting this straight. Through genius ingenuity and iron will, he hand built a floating rum distillery aboard an old paddle wheeler steamship he lovingly named, SS Walrus. James and his Walrus sailed the Nerang River distilling local folks’ sugar cane into prized Walrus Rum for three years keeping spirits high onshore while giving customs officers a rum-for-their-money trying to account for all the gallons produced!

From the golden fields of cane, a legend was born. The Walrus Social House is a tribute to James and his trusty SS Walrus. This is why we are a heritage inspired establishment built on traditional sugar cane earth that bore the fruits of the Walrus stills – the very steamship moored in the Nerang River on our back doorstep. This is why we are bringing back the social decency of sharing good drinks and fare with good people. Being community. Being entertained. Breathing in life. Breathing out worries. My partner and I ordered 2 drinks, 1 being a cocktail and we were served by Jason who was extremely lovely, he even told us to take a seat and he would bring the drinks to us out which I thought was great service, he told me to let him know if anything was wrong. Of course nothing was wrong, overall it was a good experience being served by Jason and we will definitely be coming back here again!

The place was quiet and casual on a weekday lunch. We are locals and wanted to try this place out to expand our horizons from one or two of our other favourite hang outs. One thing that stood out was no table service, order at the bar. First bartender very accommodating but change of shift meant second bartender, not as much. There are limited options here for kids. Seating especially. The lounges which were reserved had no one in them for the two hours I was there, the others were in use. They became available after half an hour though. The food was standard modern for lunch we had tapas- wings (about 8 from memory with blue cheese sauce), pizza (medium size) chips (small basket ) and haloumi (with cherry tomatoes and dried herbs). The food was good but nothing to rave about. The 4 cheese pizza for the kids lacked any sauce and was ignored by the kids for chips instead. A late lunch for them but nothing of any substance. So deduct the alcoholic drinks and meal was about $85, this was for finger food, two juices ($12 for the kids) and the kids were hungry. We went home for vegemite sandwiches. Thanks Weekend Edition for the voucher we had won. Thanks also to the older couple that commented on how well our kids behaved (we eat out often). But sorry Walrus Social House we won't be returning soon.

From the the outside & looking on Instagram I assumed it would be a stylish, casual & busy establishment for Sunday arvo tapas & drinks. Instead it felt as it was, a lobby bar/restaurant in a hotel. The fittout was high quality but it was a mix of styles, the music was way too low & lacked vibe as the floor plan was too separate. The tapas was really nice but it was overpriced for what it was. They tried but didn't get it quite right!
