Waitakere Hospital

Story

Waitakere Hospital is a general hospital located in the Henderson/Lincoln suburb area of Waitakere City, part of the Auckland area of New Zealand. It is administered by the Waitemata District Health Board and provides health services to approximately 560,000 residents throughout North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney districts of Auckland. It has 76 medical beds and 6 coronary care beds, a maternity unit and a surgical unit with 2 operating theatres. The hospital’s Emergency Department is open to both adult and paediatric patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week,.HistoryIn 1945 the original Waitakere Maternity Hospital was a small building in Te Atatu. The idea of a new hospital was raised that year, but it was another ten years before a site was found for the ‘North Western Hospital’.In the ensuing years a geriatric block was built and the site also became a base for community home health and support services, child disability services and for health services to school children - public health nurses, hearing and vision testing, school dental services.HealthWest, a private primary health provider, was as of 2006 in negotiations with the hospital to be allowed to provide fee-paying patients with medical services in the hospital. While this proposed measure did not go forward as of mid-2007, it highlighted the fact that even after the NZ$60 million upgrading to general hospital status, the facility was still facing shortages, like many other public health facilities in New Zealand. In the first five months of 2008, the emergency department of the hospital was forced into partial closure 52 times, and has still not officially become a 24/7 facility. This is being blamed on short-staffing and financial constraints of the District Health Board.

Gave birth there twice, maternity ward staff were all very attentive, have great patience, professional, generous with their time and always ensure I was well taken care of. Really appreciate that they allow you to stay in the hospital for as long as you need, unlike other hospitals in Auckland that need to turn the beds around fast due to high volume and high risk. Although the building and facilities are dated, the maternity ward still functions very well. The only let down was the food speechless, judge the photo for yourselves…, and twice I had inconsiderate roommates with inconsiderate noisy partners staying overnight with them or have the whole tribe visiting them, and ignore nurses’ instructions to be considerate to others and use the whanau/ common room.
Went to this hospital with an obviously broken arm. The nurse on the reception was so rude I left and went to the urgent care down the road. The doctor there just looked at my arm and confirmed it was broken, they then sent me back to the hospital, as their radiology dept had shut by this time. I saw another nurse on reception, when the first one came up to her and told here I was wasting their time and had been in earlier. He then stated I would be waiting 8 1/2 hours to be seen. This same time frame was given to everyone who came in the door, and some of these people even I could see, were in urgent need of care. I waited about twenty minutes the same as everyone else he told would wait for 8 1/2 hours. He was defiantly in the wrong job.nThe rest of the staff were absolutely brilliant and and treated my arm with care and great skill.nIts a shame that these companionate and caring people were let down by the one on reception.
I'd like to give five stars to the doctor and nurse who attended to my needs. Under the circumstances they were great and very professional.nnOverall, an experience that confirmed how broken our health system is. Also an experience that has made me super anxious about ever having to return again. I feel I waited far too long for pain relief.nnEveryone deserves to be treated with dignity and I'm sad to say that some staff have the tendency to be very dismissive. However, thank you so much to the male nurse who cleaned up after me when I vomited on the floor - you are a born nurse. You friendliness and smile remain with me.nn7 hours from admission time to official discharge time, but it took at least a further 45 mins to have the lead removed from my arm.nnMy advice is to not to go to A & E without a support person.
When my daughter came in from falling off of the bed, we were immediately faced with criticism by all the staff because we are teen parents. After staff found nothing wrong with her we were told to stay four hours as a standard measurement to see if anything worsened. After that staff put off discharging us and said that we would have to stay overnight. I now realised this was only to get us to stay until the morning for us to see the hospital social worker. The type of care we received within the 24 hours we were held here was nothing short of dissapointing and disgusting. Do better.
Very efficient. Very helpful, and caring. Working in A&E must be very stressful, but the team is very professional.nTook my wife to the A&E here and they were wonderful. Thanks WaitakerenHospital staff.
