Tokaanu Thermal Pools

About

The place you want to be on those cold winter days!

Story

Tokaanu is a small village situated in a very pleasant quiet spot with a stream running through it. Boasting a Thermal bathing area a taonga of the Ngati Kurauia people a hapu of Ngati Tuwharetoa, which for generations has been recognised as having the 'wai ora (healing waters)'.

The thermal waters and steam in generations past was used for puia (cooking with the steam) and boiling harakeke (flax) for raranga (weaving). This still happens today.

Come and share our taonga and we will ensure that you enjoy every moment of it.

Our complex is in need of a little TLC but that just adds to the flavour.

Adults and children alike can enjoy the public pool to their hearts content all day if they wish, and the private pools at night with the stars shinning bright and the occasional snow flutter, brings out the romantic side of one.

The pools were closed for a couple of weeks for a repaint and general repair. The new pool looks nice and fresh now and it is evident that there is going to be a few other changes to the decking and walkways. Good value for $8 per person, a little more if you want to use the private pool area. There is also a small geothermal walk around the back of the property which heads through a small track of native bush.

It has always been a family tradition to stop here on the long car journeys up and down the North island. It is so refreshing to take half an hour to relax in some natural hot water. The private rooms are such a great value it's always worth the stop. There is also a great little bush walk outside of the hot pools too. Definitely worth checking out also if you have the time and need to stretch your legs.

Bring a towel! They charge $3 to rent a towel! We tried a private pool ($12/person for 20 minutes). I think 10-15 minutes was enough since it was so hot. Private pool was OK. It is enclosed (no view) but open to the sky. Pretty basic small pool (maybe 4-5 meters on the long side). Nothing fancy.

Very rundown. Looks like haven't been refurbished since 1970s with peeling paints and dirt in the private pools. The public pools look better but the chlorine smell is strong and I wouldn't enter. Dont have any choice since that is the only thermally heated pool area I know. I would gladly pay more for a more pleasing looking place. The extra star is for the easily accessible thermal walk after the soak and trout feeding by the bridge.

Great place to visit especially on a cold wet winters day. Soaking in the hot pools is simply awesome as the rain falls around you
