Good place to catch lo-fi Indy bands, pub can be a little grotty. It'd be better if they kept a more consistent supply to tapped beers.
Awesome joint, did the photography for "subway to venus". Place has got a very unique vibe
For the supposedly "best live music venue in Canberra" the audio quality performing bands are forced to deal with is awful. If you enjoy obnoxiously loud guitar treble, tinny cymbals, and don't care too much about vocals, then this place is for you. Standing outside at the bus stop you get a better audio experience than inside the venue itself. The worst bit is that the bands are generally very good, but either the hardware or the sound engineering they have to deal with, at least for me, ruins the set. This makes sense when you take into account the rumours of financial troubles. Positive is the drinks are pretty good and aren't a rediculous price like other venues in civic, or even other counterpart venues in other cities.
The Phoenix is one of the few alternative bars around Canberra. Its dedication to live alternative music has been overlooked and the place needs more respect support than most provided so far. Prices are reasonable and the range of drink won't let you dry. The bands playing won't be always your cup of tea but this shouldn't stop you from swinging by and check what's on tonight. If you truly wants to see what Canberra has to offer you can't ignore this one.
patrons, staff, musicians and promoters are all being treated like rubbish and compulsively lied to since the new manager has started working there. A place I would visit nearly daily is somewhere I now don’t feel safe.
A genuinely quirky little bar with very regular events, an alternative crowd and decent beers on tap. Frequent poetry slams and trivia, even being half burned down hasn't stopped it from being constantly packed to capacity.
That's the place that's alway opened in Canberra. If you feel like a beer at 2 am on a tuesday, that's your joint. All kinds of people in there. Live music, honest prices. Worth the visit.
Icon of Canberra live music scene. Most bands & musicians have played at the Phoenix at some point, so extra points for supporting Canberra's music culture. Friendly and helpful staff as well.
A lucky survivor of the Sydney Building's fire in February 2014, the aptly-named Phoenix Pub remains a much-loved watering hole after the fire that damaged the old, original part of the bar. A characterful, friendly spot with a busy calendar of live music, spoken word, and karaoke.
Music is waaaay too loud, especially for 1am when patrons are generally trying to talk over a drink... It's really irritating having to yell at the person sitting right next to you, especially when even then they can't always hear you
