Dropped in for dinner on a Monday night. A comfortable relaxed Monday vibe, having never been here before I poked around and found a cracking old school lounge with big couches and a pool table. Barman recommended the steak sandwich so I sit back with a cold beer, eagerly awaiting my meal! TBC
We ordered three meals for lunch to cater for two. Ordered from the table via QR code with table service, 15 minutes. The decor is middle of the road. We ordered the Nepalese Dumplings with a peanut/tomato chutney. Serve of 6 was $16. Taste was great however the texture suggested they were not adequately steamed. We also had the Salt and Pepper Squid. Generous serve of aioli and side salad. Texture of the squid was soft on the inside with good crumb. At $19 the portion size was a little under. The Moroccan Pumpkin Salad was great. Quinoa, seeds and spinach leaves $14. Good serving size. This meal was adequate, though I would not seek this out again as a venue of choice. This might be one of the last remaining pubs that serves lunch and has a good selection of tap beers in the east end which is probably why it survives.
The decor is wonderful and the vibe was chill. The menu was absolutely delicious and well priced! We had an entrees and two mains and spend under $50. My only criticism was the tinned beetroot in the pumpkin salad. It would have been so much better with fresh beetroot.
Stopped in for lunch while visiting Newcastle. Good food. Good beer. Good venue. And friendly staff!
It’s nice to be back at the Great North Hotel Newcastle. The beer is still good and cold and still a great verity on tap. The menu has a good selection to choose from with great service.
I came here for dinner and to watch a band with my husband. He grabbed a seat in the restaurant with a good view of the band while i went to grab a drink. He was interrogated by a staff member as to why he was sitting in the restaurant without a meal watching the live music, he told her he was going to order a meal soon as she rolled her eyes. When I came back I ordered us dinner. The chicken snitzel was OK but the lambcutlets were tiny and over cooked with hardly any meat. Not to mention over priced!! Was not a good experience I'd never eat here again.
To my fellow novocastrians… this fine evening I decided to visit the great northern hotel with my friends in hopes of a pleasant evening. Unfortunately. This was not the case. To begin my night, I ordered my food at 5:35pm AEST, a chicken schnitzel with gravy to be exact, yet after an hour of tireless waiting, I grew weary and my stomach began churning, disturbing fellow customers around me as my eye twitched. Just to add to the mix, my friends entrees came out after their mains and our drinks came 20 minutes later. Our friend who is violently allergic grasped for air as she recognised the crimson sauce which lay between her bun and patty. Shortly after, our friend fell victim to false advertising as she paid $9 for drinks after being promoted $6 drinks. The vibes were still not here as the dj took 2 hours to set up his laptop and ueboom speaker. No music has still not played. As I grew weary, I decided to get a refund of my meal, which could only be cash. This was incredibly inconvenient.
Had dinner on a quiet Monday night - very tasty Nepalese curries from their Nepalese chef. Love the art deco vibe!
Wow!! Looking swish since reopening. Really great atmosphere in each area, from the bar, the lounge and the bistro. We caught live music here tonight & enjoyed really tasty meals of pizza, risotto and fried chicken wings
Really loved the drinks and foods. Wings were really jucy and I didn't expect to find some Nepalese cuisine.
