Think it's very sad that this place was a sanctuary for the less fortunate for so many years just to be turned into more multi million dollar apartments. I think the block should be ashamed. The possibility was there to do something good with this building and so many lives could have been helped but instead it's all about making a profit and less fortunate people get thrown to the street and forgotten. To all the new residents enjoy life in your ivory tower. You never know what the future may bring, some day you also might need the services that the Gatwick and the two saints and their mother provided . I hope u don't but u never do know. 5stars to the Gatwick . 0stars for the block. Shame on u.
With communal bathrooms on every level its always handy to come home to a nice warm shower. The wife & i loved the free meals provided out the front which were an absolute treat before payday & a high police presence was surprisingly reassuring. Free top quality bicycles provided to sight see & a needle exchange program make this hotel a diverse rainbow of sunshine & exciting adventure
This place has a wonderful old world charm. Its a lovely old 1930's art deco style building with blood stained carpets right on Fitzroy Street. The residents are mostly newly released prisoners, drug addicts, drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes and mental patients. If you go there try to avoid eye contact with residents as it might result in a stabbing, or could result in you being relieved of your wallet. Security is great when the police are there, which they are most days, several times a day picking up criminals and dead bodies. I wouldnt stay here if it was the only hotel in Melbourne, you're safer sleeping in the park.
Why is it that the Gatwick is held responsible for what happens there.. I know of the Gatty from the old days, 40plus years ago and always saw it as an icon of St Kilda, just like the Espy' It's management or the lack there of that gave it the bad rap it has received in recent times. It's unfortunate that the hoity toity have won through and I also wonder how long it took local council to come to their decision? Hopefully the Gatty will be restored to it's former glory but it will unfortunate that council and the people who fought for its closer win and locals who really needed it, lose out. Here come the almost $3million apartments. Council and locals will know doubt rejoice. Now council will be shunned by the rich who buy. Hope the shoes on the other foot.....
It was wonderful to receive a "Welcome to Country" upon my arrival by several local indigenous folk. The smoking ceremony was particularly enjoyable and the blood soaked mattress and several car tyres provided ample fuel to really smoke it up.
Somewhwere to go for people with nowhere to go. Were several similar places in StKilda when I lived there for a while in the late 80's. Rose and Yvette must be the only ones who care more about the poor and the needy than they do about selling for a tidy profit. To the people complaining that it "lowers the tone of the neighbourhood" - it was there first, before the latte sipping crowd came along. You're the sort of people who buy a place next to a live music venue because it's a "cool area" - then complain and get the venue shut down. StKilda has lost it's soul, but there is a tiny bit of it's heart left. If you're looking for holiday accommodation - book in elsewhere. It's not for you.
The Gatwick is now thankfully closed & Fitzroy street is starting to return to being a family friendly place again. Good work locals in banding together in shutting down what was a badly managed hot bed of drugs, theft & prostitution. People power does work!
Those two sisters definitely deserve a title in the Queens Birthday list after devoting 48 years of their life to the homeless & desperate .
Closed but was a refuge for the hard up, unsuitable for yuppies. Now The Block TV show. Social Housing for millionaires who can look down on the homeless. Eating stale cake in the laneways
Horrible. Full of needles and the new 'ice' drug. Do not visit here, a murderer no joke was arrested here after high on drugs. Avoid this hotel for your safety. Thanks.
