Story

The Fresh Food Merchant is a locally owned market hall, located in the old Cressy Trading Co building. This Geelong icon - a once popular market and trading place - has been recently restored. Keeping the character of the old Cressy's past but with a youthful injection of life. The Merchant provides central Geelong with a fresh food service that has long been overlooked.

Beware of buying items on sale. Not one, but most of them are way past their expiry dates. I bought a biscuit today and just realized, after eating, it expired in June 2022- 5 months have passed and they were still sitting on shelves??! Can’t be human error. What are the ground staff and management doing? This is not the only review that says about expiry issue. BEWARE!!!

I bought an item. The price I paid for was different from that of the label price. The lady told me the price was not update. I need to pay the update price. So i am not sure in this store all the price are not update or just the one I buy.  You should check the camera first. I show the staff the shelf price and the staff took the shelf price, she told me the price is not update I should pay the system price. And ask me do you still want to buy it? Even no apologise for the mistake.

Grabbed a coffee with my partner and bought some delicious fresh seafood! Everyone was lovely, we will be back!

Wonderful store with fresh fruit and vegetables, and a deli with a vast selection of local and imported meats and cheeses!   You can even grab a coffee while you wander through the grocery aisles, where I've discovered some hard to find ingredients readily available!  Definitely the first place to visit when you want to cook up a storm!

Well, I love this place. Big variety of deli meets and cheeses with fresh seafood down back.

I buy my eggs here all the time & then one day tried to buy my fish, but was very disappointed with the fish i bought- not fresh at all I should have bought my fish at the grocery.

About ten days ago I bought some ice cream from the Fresh Food merchant priced at 11 dollars. I took it home and took one mouthful and spat it out. I saw that it was six weeks past its use by date. Basically, it was off. I threw it out. I called the next day to let them know it was out of date, as I hadn't kept my receipt. The woman I spoke to said she would pass the message on to the manager and that someone would call me back to arrange a refund. No one called, I won't ever shop there again.

Sadly today I went into the deli to purchase some cold meats and cheeses only to find a young girl behind the deli with no hair net on, plating her long hair IN THE DELI WHERE THE FRESH FOOD IS. The young lady came over to serve me once she completed the braid in her hair but didn’t even wash her hands before approaching me. I asked was she going to wash her hands and then prompted her to do it before serving me which she did but I by that stage felt very put off by the scenario. She was a younger staff member and for that I can be forgiving but even youth need to be let know at times when behaviour isn’t ok - and I think she gauged by my disgusted look that I wasn’t happy. Lesson learnt!

The Fresh Food Merchant and the Fish Shop within it have been my saviour during lockdown.  I shop there several times a week as there is plenty of room, no waiting outside and always something new, interesting and delicious to try in addition to all the basics like milk, bread and eggs.  Lots of local produce too which is important right now.

LOVE the Fresh Food Merchant! Sooo hard to choose just four from the fabulous cheeses but staff made it easier with outstanding product knowledge!! Then a browse through the amazing array of products and the addition of some sweet delicacies and mouth-wateringly fresh fruit before the smiling service at the checkout completed a marvellous visit.
