The Ball And Chain

About

With its starting history in Fremantle in 1896, we are re-establishing one of the first established pubs in the Fremantle township.

Story

The Ball and Chain is Fremantle's newest old pub and is one of the most important sites in Western Australia - it housed the first 75 convicts arrived in Fremantle on 1 June 1850.

In 1896 the building on the site was first used as a Hotel and later became a well-known corner pub ‘Hubbles’ after its owner; a meeting place for the working class of Perth’s Fremantle suburb with boxing tournaments out the back and dock-workers picked up on the veranda who sat on the timber benches still outside today.

Over the years, the Pub has been beautifully restored, highlighting some of the unique features of yesteryear and tastefully decorated with warm timber and copper finishes. The main bar has the original timber from the Matilda Bay Brewery right here in Fremantle. The Ball and Chain has the widest range of Matilda Bay Craft Beer on Tap – brewed as it was 30 years ago out of Port Melbourne Vic.

Complimented with a wide range of bourbon, scotch, rum and other enjoyable spirits, the new Ball and Chain Bar continues to enjoy patronage for what it was built for – serving great drinks and food with a smile to its customers as it did over 100 years ago.

Friendly staff service and great food and and at an even better price if you order the right meal on the right day. Highly recommended for those staying at the Esplanade.
Nice location. Staff were friendly! Beer was good and the loaded fries and jalapeno poppers were amazing.
Good for a beer or two and good tucker
Great pub located within the Esplanade building. Quick, efficient service. Extensive range of tap beers, wine and spirits. And the live band we saw here were phenomenal. The outdoor beer garden is a great place to hang out and watch the world go by or catch up with friends.
Nice little corner bar. Had live music when I went. The guys playing were really good. The beers are cold and the place is clean. Can't say much beyond that since that's all I had.
Excellent... nice an cozy on a cold day....
Unfortunately waited over an hour for our meals when the restaurant was not that busy, and in a group of 8, every single meal was missing something. Service was average and no apologies offered for all the missing items. Great location, but won't be going back.
Good location in Freemantle opposite the park and near the water. Some good beers on top and great service. The porter was yum.
