The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery

Story

In 2008 Rodney Dunn and Séverine Demanet started The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School & Farm. It was borne from a longing to connect back to the earth, and to grow and cook authentic food with real ingredients. It has welcomed guests from around the world to share in this experience for the simple fact that good food is even better when shared.

The next chapter in the agrarian journey began in 2015 after Rodney and Séverine fell in love with the beautiful Bronte building in nearby New Norfolk’s Willow Court - the town’s old mental asylum. With vast expansive space, large windows and high ceilings lined with the original pressed metal, the building begged to be filled with diners.

The vision is to create a space where local, seasonal produce is celebrated. Where the diner experiences a true sense of place through the food they eat. Where the ingredients speak for themselves with little adornment. Our aim is to foster a community of local growers, farmers and fishermen through which the mainstay of our ingredients are sourced along with excess from the cooking school’s garden and farm. Fruit and vegetables enter the kitchen with remnants of leaves and soil attached, meat as whole carcasses to be hung and broken down when required.

In the kitchen, under the guidance of Head Chef Ali Currey-Voumard, these ingredients meet the fire power of our handcrafted wood-fired oven, grill and hot-smoker, all built from old bricks off the Willow court site by master craftsman Dennis Benson.

Excess produce of the season receives special treatment of preservation being pickled, jammed, fermented, and cured in our dedicated preserving kitchen to be featured on future menus or offered for sale in our store.

Our philosophy also extends to what is in your glass, with Beverage Manager Adi Ruiz applying a responsible radius to his selection of wine, beer and spirits, all the while dipping into the supply of produce to create his own syrups and fermented concoctions for cocktails and punches.

In the dining room, Restaurant Manager Katrina Birchmeier delivers unpretentious, diner-oriented service, where everyone is made to feel welcome. A convivial atmosphere is fostered to ensure the dining experience matches the authenticity of the ingredients on the plate.

If you value clean, fresh, homemade and sustainable food experiences then you must try this restaurant/garden. Not only was the food simple yet beautifully complex in its flavour profiles, you could taste the freshness of the ingredients grown on site.nnWith the non-alcoholic pairings, the whole experience was perfect.nThe gardens were beautiful, the service was prompt and well thought out, and the history is also really interesting!nnLoved being able to see the kitchen up close, it made the food feel even more special.nnIf you’re someone who likes your meat, this experience may not be as fulfilling! Just putting it out there, for me the one meat course was so stunning it was enough!nnThank you to the whole Agrarian team, for putting so much time and effort into the food you make. It shows on the plate and can be tasted with so much joy.
The absolute best food experience I have ever had. We started our visit with the garden tour which is well worth the price. Rodney one of the owners took us through their garden and gave us some history as well as info about their plants and why they do certain things. He also answered all questions of the group.nnWe started with a drink and snacks in the yard for our restaurant experience and we’ve never had vegetables taste so good especially raw.nnOnce inside the restaurant it was just magnificent. The vibe is very sleek but doesn’t feel too fancy, just right. The food is served with care and the wait staff are very knowledgeable but down to earth and can have a chat.nnWant to give a shout out to Riley & Jess who made us feel right at home in the restaurant and in the garden.nnAnd now the food! Oh my what a treat, everything that came out was finished and sparked conversation. It has me so curious about food and they switch menu every week! I couldn’t believe it, the chefs must be so talented!nnAbsolute stunner spot for food lovers or people who just want to be wowed by food!
Absolutely outstanding experience!nThe Agrarian Kitchen is unlike any dining experience I’ve had before.nnI love the juxtaposition of this converted insane asylum into a modern farm with all locally made & sourced produce.nnThe food is exceptional especially with the non-alcoholic pairing!nnThe staff go above & beyond too! Extra special shoutout to Riley who made my birthday extra special. 10/10

We had a wonderful experience with the degustation at Agrarian Kitchen. Meticulously planned and perfectly executed.nThe service was friendly, warm and inviting. Each course was thoroughly explained and at no point were we left wanting in terms of assistance.nWe would love to dine here again!
