Standley Chasm

About

Welcome to Angkerle Atwatye - Standley Chasm! Located just 40 minutes out of Alice Springs Standley Chasm is a great place to spend a day.

Story

Located just 40 minutes drive out of Alice Springs, Standley Chasm is the result of surging flood waters over thousands of years cutting through tough quartzite to form a picturesque natural alleyway. The result is a deep cleft in the rock rising 80 metres high.
The best time to enjoy the colours of the chasm is in the middle of the day as the overhead sun filters down into the cleft and highlights the colours in the surrounding rock.

There are some lovely walks in the area, with the shady scenic walk into the chasm being most notable, along a 1.2km wheelchair accessible pathway. However there is another short walk that climbs up a valley and finishes on a saddle with spectacular views, and sections 3 and 4 of the Larapinta Trail also run through the area.
The campsite here is a popular stop for the walkers during the season. There is often wildlife to spot, and an abundance of local fauna to enjoy.

The Chasm has a kiosk on site where lunch and drinks, including real barista coffee, can be purchased.
Not part of the National Parks, Standley Chasm is a privately owned Aboriginal community enterprise and an entrance fee applies to the site.

Today I did the half day cultural tour with Rhonda! I cant recommended this enough. She is such a beautiful lady and it simply warmed my soul to be around her. She taught me about traditional medicine, bush tucker but most of all her art! I learnt how to tell the story of our morning together in art. I will treasure what i painted today forever! I could have listened to her and John's stories for days! It was an experience that i will never forget and to anyone visiting the local area this tour is a must do! Thank you Rhonda and John! I will forever remember the both of you x

Nice spot but $12 per person is an absolute rip off. The walk took maybe 5 minutes so we ended up paying $24 for 15 minutes as there’s not much to see. There’s other nice spots which you can visit for free. Also the coffee at the kiosk was terrible, I feel sorry to say that because the guy at the shop was really nice but we definitely spent too much money on poor quality today :/

Go for the chasm only, it's amazing. The cafe food is expensive and worse than primary school tuck shop food. It would be good to know where the $12 entry fee is going, and I hope it's the right place.

This is the only let down in our NT trip. It is worth to have a look but they charge $12 pp for entry ? Which is a half hour return walk...... never seen such in Australia before .

The chasm itself is very interesting. But I agree that $12 per person is too steep. I was under the impression that this was an indigenous run enterprise but I didn’t see a single aboriginal person there so I have no idea where the money goes. The toilets are really clean. One thing I found annoying was the pump about halfway along the track getting water from the spring. It was partially screened off but so noisey. And then, with a touch of irony, there is a sign telling you to be quiet and listen to the spring. 🤣
