I think the Trephina Gorge presents the most amazing of Outback nature in East MacDonnell. The abundance of sandy paths that you see is all a river.nnWhat I observed was simply long stretches of sand-laid pathways. In my imagination, sand in desert is associated with aridity, not water.nnIf you dig hard and long enough, you would come across actual flowing water beneath this massive layer of sand.nnWe went uphill to see the cliffs. The red cliff faces of the Trephina Gorge are extensive rusted sediments. The rocks here are composed of quartzites. Quartzite is limestone and quartz combined, first forming sandstones. With high heat, then pushed pressures, the harder quartzites are formed. In here, the quartzites have high iron content. In time, the iron becomes rusted, and the color turns into red. The rocks that lie beneath the red surface could be any color.nnAnd then I heard the sound of water flowing in the river gum tree.nnWater may not be visible as water in the Trephina Gorge, but it is in abundance, a perfect illustration of something hiding in plain sight. According to descriptions on site, the river red gum tree grow “long roots extending down like huge straws to soak up life-giving water. Young plants quickly grow a long, central tap root to anchor themselves in the sand and a network of stabilising roots just under the surface. This root system can be just as large as the above-ground parts of the tree.”
Wonderful spot, and so close to town! Worth getting out for a night or two even jf you live in Alice like myself!
A bit tough to get to as the road is one vehicle so need to be a bit careful when driving, esp with a 2WD, and be extra careful when driving in rainy season as there are various small water pods. But the destination is totally worth the hard drive. The gorge is one of the most beautiful you will see anywhere and the rock structures + colors are totally unbelievable as you can see in the pictures. Would definitely recommend a few extra K of drive if you have time in hand when driving towards East McDonnell ranges
Stunning Gorge, nice walks, good facilities and easy to get to. The rock pool campground is accessed by a very narrow but not difficult track with only a couple of places where passing could occur but a lovely campsite. Don't even think of towing anything in here unless you are prepared to reverse it for a couple of kilometers. The main campground is fine for all vehicles.
Trephina gorge is stunning the whole Ross river a tee area is amazing close to Alice Springs day trip easy camping is cheap and peaceful but you need to be self sufficient a must see when visiting the red centre easy two wheel drive access. Beautiful place..
