St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, Brisbane. First class treatment. World class results.

Story

St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital is one of Australia's leading hospitals providing first class treatments and achieving world class results.

St Andrew’s provides the best possible care and leadership in all spheres of activity of the hospital. We have earned a reputation as a first class hospital particularly for complex clinical procedures with one of the highest patient complexities in Australia.

St Andrew’s is a world leader in patient outcomes for many of our specialties. We achieve this by attracting the best staff and medical practitioners and carefully auditing and improving on the outcomes of our treatments.

The hospital is ranked as one of Australia's top-performing hospitals by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS).

In 2010 St Andrew's completed a major $76 million redevelopment launching the hospital into a new and exciting era. As a result the hospital now comprises state-of-the-art buildings, facilities and equipment including new theatres, intensive care ward, rehabilitation facilities and wards.

Through the work of our staff and doctors and in collaboration with St Andrew’s Medical Institute we have, and will continue to evaluate, benchmark and improve what we do to enhance the quality of our patient’s lives.

St Andrew’s demonstrates results that are statistically among the best in the world and consistently measure and exceed US, European and Australian benchmarks for patient outcomes. It is in this way we fulfill our own motivation to work in healthcare and our role as a Uniting Church organisation.

Had to travel down from Bundaberg to have my surgery at Saint Andrews, and I cannot speak highly enough of all the people that work and volunteer there. Surgery is always nerve wracking and no matter how old you are you always have fears and worries. The volunteer's were so friendly and helpful, caterers were always polite, happy and helpful and I found the food to be absolutely fine. The surgical team that operated on my are top of their field and I was thrilled to wake up in recovery and see the smiling caring nurses looking after me. I was taken to the wards at around 10:00pm and the incredible nurses got me some sandwiches and water as I was starving and thirsty. I was in Hospital for a couple of days and every single nurse on duty would go out of their way to track my recovery, ask if I needed anything at all and to make sure I was as comfortable as was humanly possible. I would have no hesitation in recommending St Andrews and I would have no hesitation in having my health care handled there if it was ever required. I want to thank everyone who cared for me, especially all the amazing nurses. You are all a credit to your profession and my family and I want to simply say THANK YOU.nAll my regards, Craig Spalding.
I flew over from NZ for surgery. All the staff were kind and professional and made sure that I was comfortable and informed. They had no trouble accommodating my dietary preference and the quality of the food exceeded my expectations. Shout out to all the nurses and volunteers
One of the best experiences, that I've had in hospital, much better than PA and Redlands hospital, great friendly staff, comfy beds, top service and amazing surgical teams. Highly recommend. Not to mention the abundance of helpful and friendly volunteers, they made the experience perfect.
I recently had an admission at this hospital and overall the care was good. The only issue I experienced was during the discharge process. My nominated contact was not called by the hospital. I had been in touch with the person coming to pick me up earlier that day and advised them to make their way across. The nursing staff didn't let me know what time they expected me to be out when my primary doctor came in after 8am to let me know that I could discharge that day. Because it took them some time to arrive after 10am, I was asked to leave my room and wait in the main reception area with my discharge papers. This meant carrying a weight my bag that I was not advised to carry to reception. Luckily, another nurse saw me doing that and took the bag from me.nnIt would have been much smoother if my contact had been notified directly by the hospital, as I was still recovering and it added unnecessary stress.nnMy name is a pseudonym.
I have full private health over. I had been to this hospital once previously for a day surgery procedure and was happy. The check in process was superior to other hospitals I had been in. I felt in good hands. So I had no concerns about booking in for my full hysterectomy. I was very disappointed. Once again the check-in process was wonderful and the nurse there was understanding, empathetic and professional. It was the night of the op, I was still connected to a drip and subsequent trolley. I pushed the bell 4 times as my bladder was over full and painful. As no staff appeared, I had no choice but to take myself to the bathroom. I stood up and I subsequently lost all the contents of my bladder down my legs and all over the floor and I had to use my hospital gown to mop up the urine everywhere, had to drag myself over to my suitcase to find my own nightie and try and put it on with one arm still connected to the drip. About 3/4 of an hour later, a youngish UK nurse turned up with a cup of coffee in her hand, telling me she was on her dinner break. Food: when ordering my meal the nurses different kept encouraging me to order lots and I wondered why. When the meal, a chicken roast, was served it was very small and not suitable to be fed to a dog I am usually quite content with hospital food, so not fussy . Also my cup of tea was served in a moulded plastic cup, was not hot and tasted strange. When you are recovering, all you want is a nice hot cup of tea in a crockery cup with saucer. I will never stay at this hospital again. Stay away!
