Story

Husband & wife, Rob Hastie and Tracey Colebrook grew shibui on a simple footprint of ‘low fuss’ hair. Their dry/freehand cutting, natural approach and a preference for using their hands over the brush became the essence of the brand.

At shibui our approach is relaxed and intuitive our attitude is down to earth.

We work with an awareness of fashion but endeavour to deliver hair that is not contrived and is easy to maintain.

shibui is all about understanding and appreciating the true characteristics of your hair. We embrace the imperfections and variables that make us all unique.

shibui colour specialists appropriate colour to your natural colouring, skin tone and eye color. They prefer to colour after the cut, reading the texture and shape to enhance and excite.

Despite being the worst customer I was late, spilled my coffee all over the floor first thing in the morning‍, Elissa and Dylan provided the best hairdressing experience in Melbourne. They are both masters in their craft and understood how my hair behaves. I was also impressed that I wasn’t unnecessarily upsold a service with my colour. I’ve been taught by both Dylan and Elissa how to properly maintain my new hair. The salon has a really nice vibe, and the staff are all lovely. I had an amazing experience at Shibui. I’m a person that has naturally curly hair and I love it. I don’t spend much time on my hair in the mornings apart from a brush and let it dry naturally, so when I read Shibui’s ethos it sounded like a perfect fit. Going in for a BIG cut and a fresh look, I was happily in the capable hands of Brent. Watching him work his magic was mesmerising. The team were so warm and friendly, and made me feel really comfortable with a giggle or two. Thank you so much for giving me a fresh look I love and nailing the brief. Absolutely love coming to shibui. I’ve been seeing Steph Yanon for colour the last 5+ years and wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair! She is incredible. The number of compliments I get about my hair and the length of time I can go between appointments is a testament to her ability to give me gorgeous, natural-looking highlights. I’m constantly recommending her and shibui to anyone who loves an understated, natural, low maintenance look. I’ve had a few different cutters here over the years and all have been fantastic - most recently Elisa, who has been brilliant. Everyone here is so welcoming and friendly, cannot fault their service. I’m also happy with the pricing, very reasonable for the incredible work Steph does. I can easily go 8+ weeks before feeling like I need a touch up. As a newer client, they check in after your appointment to see if you were happy with your result. Great location. Easy to make appointments. Not pushy about purchasing products or up selling you on services. Love shibui! Love Steph!
Booked in whilst down in Melbourne for the weekend. Luckily got an appointment with Brent. He took such care with my hair, trusted him 100% as his cutting technique was amazing for the style I wanted. Thank you Brent.Service: Hairstyling
He did not listen to what I was saying about how my hair behaves, or what I wanted, I have curly hair. Too short and it will be an Afro. Thought he knew better. Kept cutting far too short. Decided my part needed to be on the other side. When I said my hair likes and needed product, decided he’d use ‘something light’. Listen to your clients I now have hair too short to be able to blow dry or straighten properly.
From my significant experience with this salon, Laura and the staff are brilliant. Très sophistiqué. They are highly skilled, and honest about their views. As a client, you want that. You want guidance from someone with style and a refined eye . This salon has good energy because the people that work there have good energy. I highly recommend them.Service: Hairstyling
I'm writing this review several months after my actual haircut. I loved it when I walked out of the salon, but I LOVE IT even more now!! It is exactly what I wanted. Brent was able to make my vision come to life and I didn't even have the words to describe it, but he just got it. The philosophy of Shibui is prime - they will give you an effortlessly stylish haircut that requires minimal upkeep and lets you get ready quickly in the morning and out the door. No extra products or heat necessary to look put together.
My absolute favourite hair stylists and colourists in Melbourne. I've been a regular for 6 months. Laura and Emily gave my hair a complete makeover, and I had a pretty risque scalp bleach and chop... couldn't have been more thrilled. They understand how my hair works, and what looks good, and manage my expectations perfectly. Recently I've been seeing Shaun for my scalp bleach. He is incredible, I walk away happier every time. 110% recommend Shibui... visit Laura, Shaun and Emily, and you won't be disappointed.
A great experience every time so far. Very happy with a brand new cut from Brent and a great subtle colour from Shaun - they both really listened and did a flattering, high quality job. This salon also respects your time and doesn't leave you sitting around for ages which I really appreciate!
