This building, in popular Acland Street, St Kilda, was once the old O'Shea's Milk Bar that was turned into a cafe known as Cafe Scheherazade or simply Scheherazade. The cafe, named after Queen Scheherazade, the heroine of the Arabian Nights, was established by Avram and Masha Zeleznikow in 1958 and served traditional eastern European food. It became a meeting place for locals as well as many lost souls, displaced, refugees and Holocaust survivors. Many of the regulars travelled from afar to meet and have a meal at Cafe Scheherazade. The iconic cafe also attracted actors, singers Joan Sutherland, writers, artists John Howley and politicians Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke. It has been said that if an artist could not pay for lunch, Masha would accept a painting as payment. The Cafe was celebrated in Arnold Zable's deeply moving book called Cafe Scheherazade. After 50 years, Cafe Scheherazade closed its doors on September 7, 2008. Since then the iconic cafe changed hands a few times, once a shoe shop but today a Cotton On Body clothing store. However, it has been recognized for its historical significance and listed on the City of Port Phillip's Heritage Recognition Program that aims to provide historical information about important sites in the City that is not evident by being at those sites. A plaque on the store's fade provides a short paragraph about the site's history.
