An unforgettable sailing experience with Barbary Sailing CompanynnThis was an absolutely incredible sailing experience onboard a 100% electric sailing boat originally built in 1926 and beautifully refurbished in 2024. From the moment we left the harbour, the skipper delivered a true sailing experience — hoisting all the sails immediately and letting the perfect wind do the work.nnThe skipper was extremely knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights about the lake’s history and the Māori Rock Carvings along the way. We even stopped near the carvings, where he explained their cultural significance and gave us plenty of time to swim and enjoy the surroundings.nnEverything was thoughtfully taken care of: free towels, warm ponchos, as well as coffee and tea on board. The atmosphere was relaxed and never crowded — with only 18 guests, it felt spacious and comfortable throughout the journey.nnA perfect blend of history, nature, and authentic sailing. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable and meaningful experience on the water.
What an amazing trip ! The Barbary - historic yacht is a must do when you visit Taupo. The skipper Lloyd is extremely knowledgeable and has some great yarns. I had a lot of questions about the history of the lake , Māori culture and sailing in general especially to do with the electric engine, how cool and was stoked to get loads of info from the trip. Lloyd was also great at getting the conversations flowing , so I met some legends on the trip too!nnThe Māori rock carvings and the surrounding bays were stunning. There’s just something about cruising on a beautiful yacht to really soak up that scenery and get that authentic sailing experience, with a nice old beer in hand too of course! I think the small group compared to the large boats really made a difference.nnHighly recommend if you are keen to get out on the lake , learn about some Māori culture and see the Māori rock carvings , get an authentic sailing experience on a historic yacht, and have an absolute ripper time! A+++
Lloyd and Darcy did a great job of making us feel comfortable on the boat. A brief H&S talk was given before taking us to see the contemporary Māori carvings, whilst giving informative commentary along the way.nThere was plenty of time to swim and paddle board in the crystal clear, cool lake before it was time to return.nLloyd was vigilant at all times ensuring those in the water were safe and that sunscreen was being regularly applied.nTea and coffee was provided, beers/cider could be purchased.nWe all had a thoroughly good time.
We went on the sail boat with Lloyd and he was awesome! So much knowledge, he made sure all of us were comfy. We took a toddler and she was happy as he looked after her. Great company and made our experience amazing. Would highly recommend to anyone. I’ve done the other trips on other boats in the past but this was definitely the best experience. Thanks Lloyd
We went on the Sail Barbary cruise yesterday to see the Māori rock carvings, and it was such a fantastic experience! The lake was calm, the views were beautiful, and the whole trip felt peaceful and relaxing.nnCaptain Lloyd was absolutely wonderful — friendly, knowledgeable, and easygoing. He shared great stories about the lake and the carvings, and you could tell he really loves what he does. His passion and sense of humour made the cruise even more enjoyable.nnThe carvings were stunning to see up close, and we really appreciated how quiet and eco-friendly the yacht was. Everything about the trip was smooth, scenic, and perfectly paced.nnHighly recommend Sail Barbary and Captain Lloyd to anyone visiting Taupō — it’s the best way to experience the lake and its beautiful surroundings!
