The location and atmosphere are definitely the strongest points of this place. It’s very close to the beach with a beautiful ocean view and a really nice vibe, especially if you’re looking for a relaxing spot or somewhere good for photos.nUnfortunately, the food quality was quite disappointing and not at the level we expected. The coffee was also very average — probably around 3/10. Overall, I’d recommend it more for the view and ambiance than for the food or coffee.
Very good food. Average prices but very good. Hot honey pepperoni pizza was great. The chips with the steak were awesome too. Individually large but super crispy outside and nearly like mash inside. Great for people watching
The food at Republica was excellent. The fish and chips were the best I've ever had—the chips were perfectly crispy, and the fish batter was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the meal, and the service was friendly and attentive. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I would highly recommend it.
Salmon Tartare...two words which sound less like a dish and more like a minor French aristocrat who lost a duel in 1783. Fortunately, at Republica St Kilda Beach, it was excellent: fresh, delicate and entirely worthy of its distinguished name.nnIt was the middle of winter now when I visited, which meant St Kilda Beach had been returned to its rightful owners: seagulls, joggers and people contemplating their life choices while staring at the ocean. Republica was pleasantly quiet, almost deserted. Some people might consider this a problem. I considered it a feature.nnThe views are magnificent. Grey winter skies, rolling water, an almost empty beach stretching away into the distance. It is the sort of scene that makes one feel thoughtful, poetic, or at the very least slightly less annoyed by emails.nnThe service matched the atmosphere perfectly: relaxed, friendly and effortlessly cool. Nobody appeared to be in a hurry, which suited me fine because I wasn't in a hurry either. Civilisation occasionally works best at half speed.nnThere is a large outdoor area which I imagine becomes quite lively when Melbourne remembers how summer works. In winter, however, it becomes something even more valuable: empty. Since I generally regard crowds as an unfortunate design flaw in humanity, this arrangement suited me admirably.nnThe Salmon Tartare was excellent, the setting beautiful, and the whole experience wonderfully peaceful. Republica in winter feels less like a restaurant and more like a temporary ceasefire from modern life. The ocean rolls in, the tourists stay home, and for a brief afternoon one can eat well, drink quietly and admire the beach without having to share it with half of Melbourne. A rare and delightful thing.
Beautiful and spacious restaurant by the beach. We ordered fish and chips, crab risotto and the foccacia with the pumpkin hummus. The portion is quite big by my standards. The pumpkin hummus was amazing, flavourful and perfect with the warm and soft foccacia. Fish and chips were great, crispy yet soft on the inside, fish were fresh. Risotto was also good and creamy but a bit too salty. Very relaxing atmosphere so it is a good place to wind down on a beach day.
