I am a French citizen, working in the humanitarian sector and international law, and have been on the road for now twenty years from Africa to Middle East, America, Asia, Australia and currently NZ. This is the first time I (have to) leave a negative review. The picton house BnB is the worst experience I ever had in terms of welcome (Coral is the name of the lady). Basically, it's been a series of inconveniences : 1)As I needed to rest, I had booked asking for a quiet bedroom. The request was accepted. Upon arrival, I notice that the other bedrooms are still free and located on the backside, while my room is one of the two facing the street. Anyway, I try to have a nap but after two hours I give up and ask Carol is she has another bedroom, knowing I asked for a quiet one and others are not occupied yet. Here, with a large smiling Coral explains that those bedrooms are not more quiet (which I can tell, as I visited them, is not true), that basically she's sorry but there's nothing she can do. As I insist, she replies that as I can see, it's a noisy environment and house as it's surrounded by two streets. I answer that it's not really what's advertised online neither what they told me on the phone, and then with an even larger smile she says "well darling, you don't have to stay with us, we can refund". 2) I go back to the bedroom, try to relax and look at other hotels. But of course, internet was hardly working. I go see her to kindly ask her to try restart her wifi and she answers that the pb is my phone, not the wifi (ha, strange it's only in this place!). 3) Finally, roaming, I find another place. Expensive, as it's last mn and Christmas eve, but the guy is kind and understanding and offers a good deal. I book it. Here I go to see Coral, who of course says that no, there's no refund for the first night as there's a policy. I note that it is not what she explained earlier, to which with an even larger smile (you wonder how it's possible) she repeats that there's a policy. So I repeat it's not what she says an hour ago and here, she just answers that I can come tomorrow for the reimbursement of the second night but not the first night. At this point (determined to get out of this house where I definitely do not want to stay for Christmas eve, despite the loss of110 NZ dollars), I ask : why would you not reimburse me the second night now, before I leave? And she answers that she does not have cash and needs to go to the ATM, therefore I need to come back tomorrow, ha! 4) Last but not least, I need to add something that shows the beautiful Christmas spirit of Coral. Upon arrival, few hours before, Coral had explained to me that for Christmas her family and herself have decided a few years to share diner with their clients to be all together and share international friendship or something like that. I thanked her for the warm welcome, to which she answered it was fourty dollars. Why not, I thought, let's see how it goes. And at this point, she entered a long sentence to explain that actually everything would be closed in Picton, which her and her mother find very sad, so "as you wish Darling but I would advise you to book" etc etc. I found that quite marketing, so did not - fortunately. And later tonight, I checked in town, and was told by at least two restaurant owners that they would be open on Christmas day :) Cheers! (and be aware of people with such a large smile)
