My favourite cafe lately. The formosa set is the perfect lunch set with just the right amount of carbs, veggies, protein, fat and sauce! Sauce was yum. I normally don't like fatty meat, but the braised pork rice bowl was actually really well balanced and the fat was rendered so well that I couldn't feel the fattiness while enjoying the meal. The side dishes are so delicious, kids were happily finishing their serving of vegetables without me nagging. Tried their peanut latte with and without caffeine. I preferred it dirty with a shot of coffee. Staff were really nice and special to other cafes, food was really quick to be served too.
Atmosphere & Locationn----nMazu has taken over the space previously occupied by Mr Hendrick’s, a venue that was well-known for its consistent quality. Mazu has been on our list for a while, and we were curious to see how the space had evolved. The layout features a compact dining area at the front near the coffee counter, which leads through to a courtyard at the back. The outdoor area is well-set with large black umbrellas, providing a nice, shaded spot to enjoy a meal away from the main street.nnThe Drinksn----nWe decided to try the Peanut Butter Latte, which arrived looking quite white and frothy. It tasted exactly like peanut butter mixed with silky milk - very peanutty and quite sweet. While it was an interesting experience, it was a bit sweet for my palate and probably isn't something I would order again, though it might appeal to those who love a sweet, nutty treat.nnThe Foodn----nThe menu offers a mix of classic breakfast items, but the Taiwanese selection is what truly brought us in. The Cold Noodle is a great choice; the chilli oil is served on the side, allowing you to tailor the spice level as you mix the noodles and shredded chicken at the table. It’s a satisfying and filling portion.nnWe also had the Beef Noodles which for the price we questioned how this compares to noodle shops. The noodles were soft and silky, complemented by generous portions of beef short rib and incredibly tender beef tendon. It’s worth noting that the soup base has a chilli warmth to it, even though the menu doesn't specifically mention it. They also serve additional chilli sauce and pickled vegetables on the side, which adds a great depth of flavour to the dish.nnServicen----nThere wasn’t anything wrong with the service - we were served. But there was no friendly vibe or warmth like we have experienced at other venues this comparison doesn’t include the venues that have invited us.nnTLDRn----nA great local transition from the previous venue, offering a unique Taiwanese twist on the standard brunch menu. The food is hearty, and the courtyard provides a relaxed setting for a long lunch.
One of my all time favourite cafes in Melbourne - its incredible. The staff are lovely, the courtyard has a gorgeous garden oasis feel and the food is just divine!!!! Their Taiwanese fusion menu with classic Melbourne go tos also makes for a unique while stll really well rounded menu. They nail their coffee every time too! Most recently, tried the salmon breakfast, beef udon soup and shokupan toast original. Couldn't fault a single thing, perfectly cooked - balanced and full of amazing flavour. I always look forward to coming back :nnJ brunch gal
The Formosa Set was enjoyable, but the Steak Sandwich was not. The flavours were fine, but the meat was so tough I couldn't finish it. Ended up getting coffee and a sweet treat elsewhere to fill my stomach.nnAtmosphere was lovely – nice covered courtyard at the back that is pet friendly.
We got a mocha, soy matcha latte, beef noods, the rice set and the popcorn chicken.nnService was good. Staff very friendly and attentive. Drinks and food came out quickly.nnRice set was super homey. Probably a bit on the pricey side for the quantity we received. Beef noods was a bit disappointing. Lacked flavour. All I could taste was soy and didn't even want to finish it. Also pricey. Both mains were ~$25 each. Popcorn chicken was tasty but wasn't crunchy.nnBoth drinks weren't the worst but also weren't good enough to put them high on our list.nnMenu looked intriguing and wouldn't mind going back to try some of the other stuff.nnWould also be keen to try the outdoor area out the back next time on a nice and warm day.
