Similar to the Broad Bay Beach reserve just a little further down Portobello Road, the Mac Bay Beach provides a sheltered, harbourside low-key beach experience that really, really well suited to and for kids. This is another low-frills place, but one that's not as sheltered (from the southerly, or sou'westerly winds) as Broad Bay. However, there are more amenities at Mac Bay: things like a small general store just across the street (from memory it allows you to buy a few take-away coldies, which is perfect for the Dads out there), plus the kids playground also right across the road. Also, over the past while there's been what looks like some sort of Loch Ness Monster thing moored just a wee way off the beach. I presume it was made by locals, and it offers you one of those 'What the?' moments when you drive by. I'm tipping you could, if you wished, swim out to it - the water depth at this part of the harbour is never going to get all that deep. (But it can be a little on the chilly side...)
