Just visited the southern tip of the lake, near the Oodnadatta track. Stupidly drove out onto the salty sand. DO NOT DO THIS!!!! Luckily got ourselves out but you WILL GET BOGGED. On our way back we found more people bogged and were able to help. Park on stable ground at a lookout and walk over the salt if you must, but don't drive on it unless you absolutely know what you're doing and you're some sort of outback god.

This is one of if not the best Australian Outback experiences. I feel that you have to drive there to really experience the enornity of the Outback and the country as a whole. Go perpared as you do really need to be. The people in the Outback and the people who travel there are happy friendly helpful people. Heat is your worst enemy as temperatures really get high through the summer and a lot of places colse during the summer. The Outback has got to be one of the more remote places on the planet. Roads in from William Creek (West side) and Maree are unsealed but trafficable by 2 & 4wd vehicles in dry weather. Roads are in the main well maintained. Camp site on east side ('The Neck') is superb.
