The first time I visited Joe's Catch of the Day in about 2011 I wasn't overly impressed. When Balmain Blu changed hands, I decided to go back to Joe's to give it another try and was pleasantly surprised. I've ordered plenty of meals since then and have always had a delicious experience, whether it be the fish, salads, calamari or chips. It's pretty consistent overall and I would suggest it over the other fish and chip shops around the local area.

When Joe owned the business it was super fresh and spotless. Just like in the Google pictures. You could eat your dinner off the floor. Having said that, Joe sold the business for good money as it was a good business, certainly worth it. The new owner ran the place into the ground. He sold it I don't know when because one visit was enough. Quite a while later I noticed different people there . The second owner since Joe. I ordered 5 crab claws and a Flat head fillet in batter and some chips and some Calamari rings. As I was waiting I started to take notice of the shop. The owner was cooking and fondling himself. I am thinking "Oh No" This is not happening. It was putrid! The floors behind the counter are greasy and in the edges and the corners have months of built up dirty black grease. The walls looked like they have never been cleaned, the refrigerated glass displays were fifthly. The crushed iced in the displayed solid ice underneath, indicating that he has never changed the ice only topped it up. The ceiling has so much oil on it, that it was building up into droplets. Ready to fall on customers heads. The shop looks nothing like the Google ad. Not even close. The nice blue menu boards above the the cooking equipment are gone replaced with grease covered black boards. No where could I see anything to do with cleaning, not one sponge or cloth. NOTHING! I noticed that the Tartar sauce in little containers were left out and not refrigerated all day, That day it was over 36 degrees. The fridges are rancid. Haven't been cleaned for a very long time. Any way I received my order and left. I arrived home and opened the box. There were 2 crab claws not five. I was charged for five. the fish in batter was loose inside the batter as if the batter was a separate bag, I shook the fish and you could feel it slide up and down inside the batter. I may be mistaken but I am pretty sure it pulsated. I broke the batter and a gush of air came out. It was the most vile putrefying stench that I have ever smelt. My wife ran to the bathroom and vomited. I wasn't far behind. A yellow creamy yellow bile like substance came out and contaminated the rest of the food. (if you can call it that) The Tartar sauce as I suspected was off. It was puss! The Calamari rings were so big you and tough you could use it for a fan belt, in an emergency. The crab Claws did not or I wasn't game to touch them. They went straight in the bin outside, not inside as my son came out and accused my wife and I of hiding a rotting cadaver in the house. Nothing short of excrement !! How does the Council and the Health Department allow health hazard like this to operate? If you want to catch a flesh eating disease or or ruin your health for ever . Visit Joe's Purifying catch of last few months. THIS PLACE IS A BIO HAZARD, And the owner could use a shower. Avoid at all costs. We miss you the real Joe, In fact all of Balmain misses you. Really there is no real good fish shops in Balmain. The other one suffered a similar fate, Sold and putrid now
