We've been dining at Hotaru for a number of years and each time has been a good experience. The place could do with some renovations and is a little bit tired, but we don't visit it for anything fancy. It's a humble restaurant with good service and food - eg, sashimi and sushi are fresh, teppanyaki dishes are flavoursome suggest the teppanyaki beef tenderloin & other main dishes are good too. Ratings 5 out of 10 is average Food: 8.0/10 Service: 7.5/10 Price: $$$ out of 5
Great option for authentic Japanese food in Adelaide close to Central Market precinct. Service 5/5: The waitress/assumed owner did a great job at explaining the menu and the various items, she was quite friendly and efficient. The tables are clean and plates nicely arranged. We ordered the assorted sashimi and some small rolls and nigiri for a light dinner. Assorted Sashimi $35 4/5: Generous cuts of kingfish, tuna and salmon with shredded daikon. At this price point we were pretty happy with the dish , each fish tasted fresh and the salmon in particular was the most flavourful on that day. Salmon and tuna rolls $5.50 each 4/5: Each fish was good and there was a good ratio of fish to rice, only improvement would be if the rice was seasoned a bit more for our taste - it was a little plain and some more seasoning would've helped to bring the dish together. Kingfish $7.50 and unagi nigiri $8.0 4/5: Fish is the same good quality as from the sashimi however a little more seasoning on the rice would've made it a 5/5. Unagi was ok and worked well with the plainer rice in this instance as it is heavily seasoned. Overall we would not hesitate to visit again and try some of the other highly rated items like the sushi boat with a larger group.
Hotaru Japanese Restaurant is a beautiful establishment that is perfectly ran with an amazing atmosphere. When we arrived, an array of lanterns and artworks illustrate a beautiful interior of the restaurant. All our servers were incredibly friendly, notably the female FOS, who was charismatic and accomodating. There is a large selection of hot and cold dishes from the menu, with a reasonable price point, and also features a large selection of Japanese wines and sake. All our meals were perfect temperatures, with a succulent and balanced taste, and fair serving sizes. Out of my meals, the sushi rolls were expertly assembled, the miso soup had a complex umami flavour, and the steak was a perfect medium rare with a sweet sauce to accompany. Highly recommend coming here with friends or family for a memorable experience and exceptional quality food!
Lovely food. Not a lot of options but every dish is done well. The udon broth was heavenly. Generous serving of tempura tooFood: 4/5
The restaurant was a bit dusty and smelled musty, but don't let this deter you from the very fresh and good quality sashimi and sushi that it offers . Reasonably priced, we highly recommend the sushi boat if you're a sashimi and sushi lover -- we ordered the small for 2 people, which was perfect. We'll be back again! We were seated near the front of the restaurant by the windows in the corner so this was very obvious to us. Cleaning the windows and a few scented candles lit throughout the restaurant would be enough to make this place 5 stars.
Unassuming little place on Gouger St that could be easily missed. The Tepanyaki food was magnificent. We had beef and mushroom roll, beef and scallops. Loved it all and a treat to watch the chef at work whilst hostess Priscilla cheerfully made sure we had everything we needed. I'll be back.Food: 5/5
Really great Japanese food with excellent customer service. Will definitely revisit. The sushis and Teppanyakis were absolute money and they also have a really great lemon and honey drink that could be consumed hot or cold. It's so refreshing and highly recommend to try it out. Thank you Team for making our visit a delightful one!
It was our second time within 3 weeks but this time we were quite disappointed. The tea pot soup was good and tuna hand roll was so just ok without much flavour. The worst was the grilled steak. We ordered medium rare but it was so over cooked to well done. Dry and tasteless When i told the waitress, she said maybe the chef has mixed up our dish with another table. There was no apology and no gesture to make up for the mistake. In the end, it was our bad luck! We paid $25 for a chef’s mistake.
Very nice service so friendly and polite. Beautiful food and good selection of Japanese beer and sake. The green tea ice cream was delicious and very moorish. Felt like being in Japan again with the layout and calm respectful service. Would definitely come again what a lovely dining experience.
The variety is excellent and the sushi boat was filling, fresh and very tasty.Food: 5/5
