Hope & Anchor Tavern

Story

The Hope and Anchor Tavern is an Australian pub in Hobart, Tasmania. Built in 1807, it is claimed to be the oldest Australian pub, having continually operated until 2008. However, The Bush Inn in New Norfolk claims to be the oldest operating Australian pub, because their venue has operated continuously since it opened in 1815 whereas the Hope and Anchor Tavern has had periods of closure since opening in 1807. The Hope and Anchor Tavern is referred to in 'Captain A E Sykes: memoirs'It was reopened in 2014 after the building and its extensive antique collection were purchased by Chinese developer Kim Xing for A$1.5 million. The property was then leased to Robert Wilson whose goal is to preserve a piece of Tasmanian history. The building has been listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register since 1998. The Hope and Anchor Tavern was owned for many years by Gunter Jaeger, who also owns Boomer Island. The current licence 2015 is Daniel Cullen whose food expertise has helped make the hope and anchor tavern a hospitality success story since the reopening.

Wow, what a find! Gorgeous pub/museum - lots of fabulous memorabilia around the place; old photos, farm gadgets, kitchen bits and pieces and working fireplaces. The food is a winner here ~ honest and ample pub food. We ordered a steak and the beef cheek - couldn't finish them ~ delish! Service friendly and efficient and prices very reasonable! Loved it!

It seems as though a new menu was introduced a few months ago. For the new average price of around $20-25/meal you would expect something special. The meals, though decent, seemed the exact same quality and size as those on the 50% cheaper menu from a few months ago. I cannot justify the price tag for average pub food that you can pick up for $10-15 from several pubs in the area. The drinks are still decently priced though (around $11/pint).

Most probably the oldest continous hotel in hobart perhaps even tasmania. Decor has re-captured that colonial atmosphere. Meals very good and reasonably priced.
