Story

Heirisson Island is an island in the Swan River in Western Australia at the eastern end of Perth Water, between the suburbs of East Perth and Victoria Park. It occupies an area of 285600m2, and is connected to the two foreshores by The Causeway. The next upstream island is Kuljak Island, then Ron Courtney Island, with no islands in the Swan River downstream between Heirisson Island and the Indian Ocean. Before development, there were several small islands, surrounded by mudflats. The Noongar name for the area is Matagarup (meaning "leg deep"), which has been retained for the single island after reclamation.Over the years, dredging and reclamation has created a single island, which is now a landscaped nature reserve, with a 2km walking path.In 1998, five female western grey kangaroos were introduced onto the island, followed by a female with a male joey in 2000.PlansIn 2008 a new master plan for Heirisson Island was adopted by the City of Perth. This plan integrates a proposed international quality sculpture park on the island and the construction of a footbridge over the northern channel of the Swan River. The footbridge will link Point Fraser to the island and provide a gateway to the proposed sculpture park. The sculpture park concept is being driven by a not for profit organisation Heirisson Island Sculpture Park Inc. with the support of the City of Perth.

It costs no money to see Kangaroo here! Just walk to the south part of the Island and go inside the fence don’t forget to close them again to protect this Kangaroo. I’ve been there in the mid-afternoon and late afternoon and always can spot them here, under or near the trees or bushes. Besides being Kangaroo, it is an excellent place to have a picnic or walk. The car park is free for 3 hours as well.
Very nice place for a little walk, quite quiet and you can meet 6 kangaroos but also ducks or pelicans. I love it.
Its a nice little Island for walks and to see the Kangaroos..I saw 3 in the early evening. But, it's supposed to be no fishing and no dogs on the Kangaroo part of the Island. Sadly I saw both. What is wrong with people? And why is there nothing done about this? Just totally disrespectful from some people which spoil it for others.
Quite walk and close matagarup bridge and Optus stadium and I saw the a lot kangaroos when in the sunset beside the city!! So lovely and enjoying this place so much!!
The gated kangaroo area is located on the western side of the island. Saw 7 kangaroos near dusk. Island was quite deserted on a Friday late afternoon. Be prepared to walk through vegetation to see the kangaroos.
Heirisson Island can be accessed by car or by walking/cycling from nearby bus stations. It is a quiet and clean island perfect for walking/sitting. There is a fenced area where the kangaroos are, towards the back of the island. One is responsible for themselves and the kangaroos, i.e. you have to close the gate once you enter the restricted area. Kangaroos can be spotted in the open during the day, feeding or laying around. There are a few different types of birds on the island as well which one can see. The island is a really nice place for nature photography. The water bodies in the island apparently contain snakes I did not spot any, but there are warning signs in place!
Saw many ducks but no kangaroos. Perhaps I went there too early 3pm and I did not go too near to the vegetation. Still, it is a nice place for a relaxing stroll. More benches would be great but not sure if such things would be harmful for the wildlife there.
Parking is available on the east side of the road. No designated motorcycle parking. From the car park it is a 10min walk to the enclosed area with grey kangaroos.
Free and not too busy. Nice views of the city, the Optus stadium, the river and the casino. Good place to enjoy a quiet walk or for some exercise. Some kangaroos can also be seen, dolphins in the river on occasions.
Heirisson Island is the small island connected to the causeway between Perth City and Victoria Park/Burswood area. You can park in Burswood park by the Crown casino to walk to the island. There are two halves, the Southern end is gated and has the free roaming Kangaroos while the Northern end has the car park only accessible going away from the city as well as the toilets and an open park for picnics and BBQs. I was quite lucky when I went. There were people who had already spotted the kangaroos relaxing under the trees so it wasn't difficult to find them. After strolling around the southern end, I went through the underpass on the Perth city side to the northern side. As I was walking around the northern end I spotted dolphins swimming in the river. It was quite a nice walk around the island. Other people were on bikes and others were fishing along the edge of the river. Quite a nice place for an afternoon stroll.
