Gold Coast University Hospital

About

GCUH provides specialised health services that meet the needs of patients as well as the learning requirements of our future clinicians.

Story

As one of Australia's fastest growing cities and most popular tourist destinations, the Gold Coast required a facility that could incorporate flexibility into the design to allow for future expansion. The Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a highly efficient design with capacity to change and grow to meet future health service needs of the community.

Delivering a structure the scale of the Gold Coast University Hospital required a number of detailed planning and design stages. This process commenced back in 2005 and encompasses health service delivery, design and construction.

The facility is comprised of seven main buildings, with a total floor space of around 170,000 square metres (excluding car parks). To help you visualise just how large this is, the total floor space of the existing Gold Coast Hospital in Southport is around 54,000 square metres in comparison - around one third of the size of GCUH.

The Clinical Services and Clinical Support building connect with the two Inpatient Units, forming the main complex. There are nine levels in the main complex, topped with a helicopter landing site.

At a glimpse

- Clinical services and clinical support building (nine levels)
- Two inpatient units
- Pathology and education building (four levels)
- Mental Health Unit
- Western car park (with an Eastern car park as a future initiative)
- Central Energy Plant

While it may not be the biggest public hospital I've been to, it is definitely the newest. The staff, like all those who care for others, were exceptional.nPublic transportation is right at the front door and easily accessible. Since I've only been on the ward, I can't give an opinion on the ED.
Was in very recently for surgery and need to say that Ella in recovery and my nurse Daisy in Ward 3C were exceptional. Daisy especially when back on ward after op was all that anyone would need caring, eager to assist in anyway.nOnly negative l suppose was surgical team on their rounds with me in total for about 40 seconds and only comments , surgery went well will see you in 3 months for follow up. No explanation about what was done in op or post op care nor did l receive anything from nursing staff on departure on how or what to do once discharged even after asking for info a number of times.n3 days after op all seems to be going well.
Have been a breast cancer patient for almost 6 years and I'm still waiting for reconstruction surgery. Was given a surgery date which got cancelled days prior due to their ill management. Forget about Patient Liaison, they are completely useless. They NEVER answer their phones and they are a bunch of cowards who email their useless responses to formal complaints because they can't even be bothered to have a phone conversation. Pay for private health cover and AVOID this hospital. Can't wait until my story is aired on the media. This 3rd world treatment needs to be exposed.
My 19 year old stepdaughter spoke to someone regarding her mother stepdaughter is her ONLY next of kin and was treated terribly. The man she spoke with was rude and condescending. Whilst we all appreciate that hospitals are busy you need to remember that you are in a customer service role and as such at least try to be pleasant and helpful. In what is already a stressful situation you have made it substantially worse. Good work
My partner was admitted by ambulance for debilitating endometriosis pain as well as a condition that causes issues with motor function in her legs on 17/12/24 at roughly 6pm. While she was in the emergency unit before I was able to see my partner, I was horrified to have been advised that whilst having no mobility in her legs, a nurse by the name of Rachel proceeded to tell the doctor she was 'faking it' and could walk, without Dr Nagam backing up my partners situation and insisting she have a wheelchair, my partner was going to be forced to prove her illness to this nurse.nnShortly after this I was able to see my partner and found out about the situation and her treatment directly from her. In frustration I told the nurse that I was appalled by my partners treatment and heard about her trying to force my partner to walk when she clearly couldn't.nnHer response was to call my partner and I a liar and had security called on me, and would not allow me to follow my partner through to a bed I was carrying her walking aid so needed to bring it in. I was advised to wait in the waiting area of the non-acute emergency room, which I did without issue. This nurse proceeded to come out with security and advise me that my partner must have misunderstood the situation or she lied to me, my response was that I care about the treatment my fiance gets and I am appalled from what I had been told. Security deemed me not a threat at all of course I was literally just sitting down when I spoke to the nurse previously.nnI was then allowed into the emergency beds area and sat with my partner. At which point the same Doctor that supported my partner earlier Dr Nagam, confirmed the nurses treatement of my partner and said that she did in fact try to force my fiance to walk when the whole point of the visit was due to her pain, and inability to move her legs and he had to insist for the nurse to get a wheelchair.nnI am sickened by my partners treatment and my treatment when expressing how upsetting it was to hear what my partner was forced to endure.nnTo the nurse, Rachel I wish I had your lastname, you should seriously think about your treatment of others in a care industry, your attitude and how you treat people is disgusting, lying to cover for yourself is despicable.nnThankyou to Dr Nagam for your treatment of my partner, and for shedding light on how this nurse treated her, I wish there were more like you in that hospital.nnThe other staff are usually great, unfortunately we've had to go a few times, but to Rachel, this is by far the worst treatment of my partner I have seen, absolutely shameful. Your fellow staff don't agree with your behaviour either.
