Gold Coast University Hospital

About

GCUH provides specialised health services that meet the needs of patients as well as the learning requirements of our future clinicians.

Story

As one of Australia's fastest growing cities and most popular tourist destinations, the Gold Coast required a facility that could incorporate flexibility into the design to allow for future expansion. The Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a highly efficient design with capacity to change and grow to meet future health service needs of the community.

Delivering a structure the scale of the Gold Coast University Hospital required a number of detailed planning and design stages. This process commenced back in 2005 and encompasses health service delivery, design and construction.

The facility is comprised of seven main buildings, with a total floor space of around 170,000 square metres (excluding car parks). To help you visualise just how large this is, the total floor space of the existing Gold Coast Hospital in Southport is around 54,000 square metres in comparison - around one third of the size of GCUH.

The Clinical Services and Clinical Support building connect with the two Inpatient Units, forming the main complex. There are nine levels in the main complex, topped with a helicopter landing site.

At a glimpse

- Clinical services and clinical support building (nine levels)
- Two inpatient units
- Pathology and education building (four levels)
- Mental Health Unit
- Western car park (with an Eastern car park as a future initiative)
- Central Energy Plant

While it may not be the biggest public hospital I've been to, it is definitely the newest. The staff, like all those who care for others, were exceptional.nPublic transportation is right at the front door and easily accessible. Since I've only been on the ward, I can't give an opinion on the ED.
I have spent 7 weeks here previously and continue to come here every 6 months or so for appointments with specialists. The staff from the doctors to the nurses and personal carers are all wonderful. I really can't fault them at all. I know how understaffed the healthcare sector is, as I'm part of it myself. Regardless of all that, the nursing staff are always caring and understanding, and most have a great sense of humour. The food is okay. If you stick to salads and sandwiches. But that goes for hospital food everywhere. Even in private hospitals.nIt's all a business contracted out .
Was in Ward 6 East bed 55 for 3 days from 11.2.25. Full knee replacement. The staff were not short of amazing. Very caring and helpful at every request. Went above normal duties. The training staff and trainee staff were very vigilant all the time.nThey actually seemed to like their rolls which is rare in service industries today.nThank you for making my stay as pleasant as possible.
ICU never called to tell me my husband was out of surgery. Waited for hours, fearing the worst. Second time I asked ICU reception, they said he's out. Turns out he'd been there in his room for 5 hours, they just didn't call us. Absolutely appalled.nnVery disorganized! Told doctor would come see my husband before surgery, never did. Same thing with physio. Nurse said she'll bring pills for his discomfort, then goes on her break. They forgot to remove a needle in his leg that should've been removed after surgery. Nurse was never there in his room to pick up the phone and unlock the door to ICU for us.nnPiano performances were lovely though.nAlso, bring a jumper – it's freezing in there!
I have been on the waiting list for 14 months now for a specialist appointment for my knee. After my referral was accepted in November 2023 I received a letter from the hospital stating it had been accepted and I was a category 3.nWhy then after 14 months am I being screened to see if I need to see a specialist.Nothing has changed although after this length of time I'm sure my knee is worse.nSurely commonsense should prevail here and patients should be screened at the time of their referral going in.Instead of languishing on the waiting list to nowhere.nI feel the last 14 months of waiting for a specialist have been a complete stuff up!!nWhoever thought up this bright idea obviously has no empathy and doesn't care about people and just wants them to suffer.
