I arrived on Friday night at 10 pm after having Cochlear Implant surgery on Monday and feeling off since returning from the hospital on Tuesday. I had symptoms like fever, dizziness, numbness in my implanted ear, a metallic taste in my mouth, and just felt drained and off, so my cousin called a medical phone line. They recommended I go to the Emergency Department to rule out infection or something serious.nnI waited around 10-11 hours to get my blood pressure checked, speak to doctors, have blood work done, and have my incision checked for infection. The doctors were lovely and did a great job, but the emergency department was extremely understaffed, with only 2-3 doctors for a whole floor of patients. I understand emergency departments get busy, but I feel for patients with more serious emergencies who may be at risk while waiting.nnIt took over 4 hours just to get my blood pressure and blood work done, and another 6+ hours to get my results, talk to the doctors, and have my incisions checked. I had to sit with the blood tube thing in my arm uncomfortably for 5-6+ hours until I could get it removed. After 4 hours, I asked the doctors if they knew when I’d be seen since my family was waiting outside in the cold, and it was after 2 am. I was told there were 4 patients ahead of me, which shocked me because in that time, only 3-4 people had been attended to.nnDespite the understaffing and long wait times, the staff were great at their jobs and very kind. I just wish there was more staff and shorter waits. The hospital also did a great job looking after my cousin. After checking in at reception with me, she went to walk outside for air and fell face-first at reception. The receptionists and doctors were quick to help her and make sure she was okay, thankfully with no injuries.
We had to bring our little one here while we were holidaying in Gold Coast. I have to say I was a bit nervous seeing the reviews, but we went anyway. Let me tell you, our experience was anything but great. From the moment we first interacted with the staff, the triage nurses and all the hospital staff were very friendly and took very good care of us. They understood our situation and tried their best to help out. Yes, there is some wait time, but it is a public system, and they are trying their best with less staff. I suggest that if you don't want to wait, then fork out money and use the private hospital emergency instead.nIt's all relative, and I am comparing the care and excellent service we received here to the Sydney hospitals we are from Sydney. GC and Qld locals, you've got a good public health arrangement, it seems! Please be kind to the staff as I assure you, if you ever had the displeasure of visiting a public hospital emergency in Sydney, you'll get what I mean.nThank you, team, at GCU hospital!!!
My 19 year old stepdaughter spoke to someone regarding her mother stepdaughter is her ONLY next of kin and was treated terribly. The man she spoke with was rude and condescending. Whilst we all appreciate that hospitals are busy you need to remember that you are in a customer service role and as such at least try to be pleasant and helpful. In what is already a stressful situation you have made it substantially worse. Good work!
Has a very good experience here. On reflection I probably over reacted to my heart issue, but everyone gives you so many warning signs. It’s like a cry wolf situation. But Sanjay Joseph did an outstanding job as did the attending nurse and the kind man looking after the blood pressure stuff. Hoping I never go back!
